I use Bipap machine, can’t sleep post TKR

Posted by rb1229 @rb1229, Mar 9, 2023

Hi I am 56 years old and had my left knee TKR Dec 19, 2022. I use BiPAP machine for Obstructive Sleep Apnea for many years. Problem is, after TKR, I am in 12th week and still cannot sleep at night my machine and mask on. I get 30 min sleep and then wake up. Anyone else with my OSA problem and having this issue? How did you get help? Thanks

Are you waking because of knee pain? It took me about 3 weeks to get back to using my cpap machine after my knee surgery and it was almost like starting from scratch again. I am now at 5 months but I also take 900 mg of Gabapetin at bedtime so it help see sleep as well. I also take Tylenol arthritis right before I go to sleep. I use Diclofenac gel (can't take oral nsaids) and even use Ben Gay 3-4 times a day and if I wake at night use some. Not sure if that's helpful or not. I might ask my Pulmonologist what could possibly help if you think it's just related to your machine.

Thanks Cindy. Initially I thought and read that surgeries mess up your circadian rhythm. Some folks could not sleep for months. But I did not see any with OSA or with C and BiPAP. Hence I opened a separate question channel here. So you take the Gabapentene and Tynelol Arthritis at the same time before going to bed?

I take Gabapentin 900mg for my arthritis and did before surgery as well. I have added taking Tylenol Arthritis about an hour after I take the Gabapentin which helps me with additional pain or soreness. I can't take oral nsaids for inflammation. I slept awful for first month and ended up in the recliner and was up during the night sometimes crying because between being so tired and in pain I couldn't sleep and not sleeping in my bed was difficult so my cpap didn't get used. I do have a sleep number bed so when I was able to finally sleep in bed I had the back up and was sitting in a reclining position and that happened for another month or so putting be at about 8 weeks.

Understood. My knee pain is not that bad now. Some on the left outer side just above the shon bone region. I can’t take NSAIDs because of Urticaria issues. But I can use Voltaren gel ( gives some relief) and take celebrex 200 mg during the PT days. I am using sleep aids like Tamazepam, Muscle relaxants and Ambien to sleep through. But it is not like you go to bed at 10 pm and wake up at 6 am after a restful sleep. It is 1.5 hrs to 2 hrs and then breaks. Maybe Gaba may help.

I’ve had TKR, but didn’t have that problem. But when first went on my Bipap several years ago couldn’t get used to it. A friend that was a respiratory therapist suggested go to sleep with out it and when I wake up cause I’d wake up couple times a night, put it on. Since I was in sort of a sleep mode I might fall back to sleep with it on. That worked for me. I got used to having it on and was able to put on when I first went to bed.

No I am a BiPAP user for a long time. It is after the surgery that I cannot sleep. The BiPAP pressure was checked by sleep specialist but I can’t sleep .

I’m use a CPAP and second night after surgery couldn’t sleep and my numbers went crazy on my CPAP. I’m a vet so I called the sleep center at the VA hospital. They told me pain meds, etc really play havoc with CPAP machines. I gave up all pain meds except Tylenol and the next night sleep returned. Praying you get rest soon.

Thank you first and foremost for your service to the nation. I have stopped the bad painkillers like Oxycodone and others ling back. I just use Celebrex 200 mg the days I have Physiotherapy. Still I am having this sleep issue. Thanks for taking the time to respond. 🙏
