I have recently started inhaling and choking on my saliva when i sleep and occasionally when i am awake even in elevated position. I dont have any of the obvious conditions like GERD or acid reflux or any type of apnea. No breathing problems. Please help its getting worse

lcmitchell, I so empathize with you on this.

Have you had COVID by chance and do you have Long COVID? That can explain choking on saliva. A lot of
folks (myself included) on here have mentioned this.

I personally had excessive saliva & mucus from COVID and I would get choked on it at night. My bed is elevated and I do have acid reflux, but, this stuff was so thick and slimy. I had to actually scrape my tongue
daily for thick saliva as it was so coated down. The thick stuff was in the back of my throat.

After testing many things, this helped me. Please consult with your doctor before trying.

1) NAC. This is a supplement you can buy on Amazon by Pure Encapsulations or Thorne. It works as an antihistamine & anti-inflammatory. I personally take 1/4 to a 1/2 capsule as it can be too drying for me. It does make me a little tired.

2) Guafenesin (Mucinex - NOT MUCINEX D, but, plain Mucinex) is a mucus thinner. You can also buy Guafenesin from Amazon. I did 400 mg as I am so sensitive to things.

3) I take Children's Zyrtec 2.5 ml when I go to bed at night for Long Covid and it also helps with drainage and helps me sleep better.

I did not do all 3 of these at the time. I will usually take #1 or #2 during the day depending on the mucus/saliva #3 at night. NAC can be very drying to a fault. Chewing Zylitol gum (on Amazon) is a temporary fix, but, it helped a little during the day.

Drink plenty of water with any of these. It took 2 years for mine to clear up. If I get a sinus infection, the thick mucus and salvia comes back until the infection is cleared up. I felt like I was drowning in this for 2 years.

Also, I did coconut oil pulling (look this up) and gargled with warm salt water during the day. I drank hot lemon ginger tea as well.

I know how miserable this is. It's scary to wake up choking on this stuff. I believe COVID attacked my mucosa and my salivary gland.

Praying for you to get better. Blessings to you....

I know that feeling and you’re not alone. Radiation can cause heavy mucus and choking.
Before bed I swallow hot water and rinse well before brushing my teeth. I also drink 2 tablespoons of olive oil. I recently started the olive oil and it seems to help so you might want to give it a try?
Best wishes.
