@rayh12 Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I am a spine surgery patient and had a cervical fusion because of stenosis. A laminectomy is kind of like when they raise the roof on a house so they can add a second floor. It is surgery, but it is not as difficult as a fusion, and the doctor does not typically remove discs if it is just a laminectomy, but that is a question for your doctor.

Here is Mayo information about a laminectomy.

My 80 year old cousin had a laminectomy for lumbar stenosis, and he did just fine. He took pain medicine for about a week, and after 2 weeks, he had little pain. It probably took about a month to recover completely, and he was walking right away after surgery which is good to do during recovery. He was glad he had this surgery and it is a much easier recovery than more extensive spine surgeries.

Balance is very important as you age. What other questions do you have for your surgeon?
