I have high TSH but can't increase thyroid meds
68 yo female. Have hashimotos and hypothyroidism since birth of second child, 38 years ago. My thyroid labs have been " normal" a few times in those years. Right now my TSH is testing around 7-9.0, very high. It has been higher in the past. THe logical thing is to take a higher dosage of thyroid meds but I can't seem to tolerate even the slightest increase. After about two weeks on a tiny increase, I start to have hyperthyroid symptoms. This has been going on for years. I am very tired of feeling tired and down. I've been to two endocrinologists, one who suggested increasing the dose and taking beta blockers to control heart rate(not doing that) and the other one agreed with my family dr that as long as the TSH doesn't go over ten, it's ok. My free T4 is slightly below normal, the free T3 is normal. I have elevated antibodies, thus the Hashimotos dx.
I don't know what to do. I have no energy and no drive to do much of anything. I hesitate to go to another endocrinologist.
Any endocrinologists out there have any suggestions or anybody else have this situation and how are you dealing with it?

Have they checked your parathyroid?
I had trouble many years ago, and it was because the parathyroid was over active and that can affect many parts of your body, including your bones.
Wishing you the very best
You didn't mention if they did and ultrasound evaluation of your thyroid. Do you have nodules?
Mine showed up on my ct scans for cancer (another type) so my thyroid guy did the ultrasound of the thyroid and did a biopsy of two of the six nodules and sent off to a california lab to find that I have at least on indeterminate nodule. We could not get them removed due to chemo plans for my metastasized LMS (liver). However as soon as the chemo is over will go into a nodule removal and better assessment of the rest of thyroid with regard to removal.
I had EBV in my late teens and they have checked for a reinfection but not lately. I'll ask for another retest. Thank you!
A blood test was done but nothing else. Are you referring to an ultrasound?
I have not had an ultrasound for a long time and I do have nodules. I feel like my thyroid is getting larger. I will ask for an ultrasound. Thank you.
Ask your doctor if they checked your parathyroid.
It was an Endocrinologist at first checked it.
At the time I never heard of it. I read up on it and learned.
Just a thought
The people that are handling lawsuits for pffas. ( Plastics) in the water are claiming suits for thyroid damage.
