I have a serious problem with phlegm.

Posted by saunzy @saunzy, Sep 20 10:22am

The only way I can get rid of this phlegm is by swallowing (gross).
This is constant. Is there anything I can do or take for this. I am so embarrassed by this. This interrupts my sleep, happens during the day, sometimes causing a choking feeling, happen al the time. My doctor here has given me a nose spray which does not help al all.
Any help would be appreciated greatly.

saunzy, Bless you. I can relate. I have had a lot of phlegm after COVID and I have Long COVID.

Here are my thoughts:

1) Acid Reflux can sometimes present itself with the feeling of Phlegm. Talk to your Primary Care Doctor.
2) There is a nasal spray that helps dry up mucus and it is called Astelin spray. I use this along with Flonase.
3) I also at times use Guafenesin (a mucus thinner) and NAC which is a supplement that helps dry up mucus. I do not use these together as you do not need both. One contradicts the other. An antihistamine helps for
mucus/phlegm as well. Zyrtec (Antihistamine) recommended to me by the doctor. I had to us the Children's liquid...it did cause bad dreams and so I stopped using it.
4) Sinus irrigation helps me greatly with thick mucus. I use NeilMed Sinus Rinse.
5) Lemon Ginger Tea (I put a little honey in mine) helps thin mucus. I drink this at night before I go to bed.
6) Have you been allergy tested to see if you have developed a new allergy to something that is causing mucus?
7) Have you seen an ENT doctor?
8) Drinking water helps to thin mucus as well.
9) Elevate the head of your bed to help the phlegm to go down better. Do not sleep flat.

Praying for you as I know how aggravating this is. Please talk to your doctor before trying any of these.

Blessings & Prayers....

Hello, I can tell you from my spouse and his phylum. He takes Flonase and Azelastine Hydrochloride nasally. He has a paralyzed vocal chord and Gerds. He was not able to bring it up either ! Now he can.

I do not have a paralyzed vocal chord or Gerds. I do not know what my problem is. I have tried Flonase.
Anymore suggestions?

There r many great suggestions above. First thing, I would be inclined to get to the bottom of the cause with your doc. A few other ideas include breathing steam, a humidifier, warm salt gargles several times a day, medications listed above very helpful, can add ibuprofen.

Seek medical advice if phlegm persists longer than three weeks, is discolored (yellow, green, brown, black, or red), or is accompanied by chest pain, shortness of breath, or coughing up blood

My Allergy/Asthma started out with coughing and then my sinuses started over producing phlem. I researched this extensively, finding ideas I could try. I have 3 hepa filters, A large cool mist vaporizer. I gargled with salt water that I warmed up first. I saw an EMT for a lot of $$$ and all he said was my sinus appear excellent. He sent me home coughing. During this time I found chewing sugar free Cinnamon gum, really helped. Sometimes I'd use Sugar free mentholyptus lozenges which seemed to help the phlem thin out. I also used heartsafe mucinex, and my inhalers. I take Zyrtec. I use sinus rinse. Now, I'm trying Benzonitate to stop cough. It's really helping. Now I just dealing with the phlem. Chewing the cinnamon gum. Has to be cinnamon!

Thank you for posting, I've had sinus issues almost all my life, drainage
down the throat is rough to wake up with, I use something hot for
mornings, coffee or tea, preferably without creamer which adds to the
yuk. I use nose spray and there's not much comfort in it some days
not at all, a couple allergies to pollution, pollen and weather don't
help, some allergy meds help. I just happen to be in a home where all 4 of
the members have some type of allergy or phlegm. I carry no less than 4
Kleenex at a time. Sucks, but until you find the right or close enough
helper for your drainage, keep looking. My daughter's into essential
oils and I found one that helps me and it wasn't even for phlegm but
trigger finger and the smell took a little getting use to but it cut back
on my drainage. Can't explain it but it works, cut my sniffing in
half.
