Trying to recover from a c. diff infection (Clostridium difficile)
I am trying to recover from a c.diff infection. This started with taking clindamycin in mid January and 3 days later I became ill with diarrhea and felt sick, loss of appetite etc...Went to the er twice, tested negative for c.diff on my 2nd visit. The Dr. told me to take imodium to rest my colon since I tested negative. That evening I had diarrhea and took the Imodium. Became constipated with pain lower right side. I went to a GI dr. pleading for help, I did another stool test and it came back positive for c.diff. I tried flagyl but could not tolerate the side effects. Tried vancomycin for 10 days. Did not work. Tested positive again, Went to a new gi doctor who prescribed dificid for ten days. I am 31 days post dificid and I have almost constant gut rumbling and urge to go. My 1st bm in the morning is usually semi normal, but after that they are always either pencil thin and or small pieces (2 to 5 times a day). This has been my routine since the vancomycin. I do not get dull blown diarrhea..... My dr. wants me to have a colonoscopy but I an scared that the cleansing will wipe out all my good flora. I currently take 2 florastor pills and 1/2 vsl3 per day. I eat fermented pickles for the probiotics as well..... I have many food intolerances since this whole mess began (fiber, many vegatables, dairy). I also have a strange taste in my mouth most of the time, have very little energy and fight with depression. My primary gave me Xanax .25 but I only take them at night when I cannot sleep...... Went to a nutritionist who put me on a no wheat, soy, dairy, gluten diet. Does not seem to be helping or hurting. I lost 20 pounds and cannot gain any weight (I weigh 120 at 5'7")... I am thinking it might be sibo, or candida but cannot find a dr. to test for these....I am in the right place for help or advice ? The urge to go is awful and limits my once active lifestyle.....
Thank you, Scott

Well, my dr wanted to do the vanco taper, for my 2nd reoccurrence. I asked if we could skip it and go straight to dificid, which she agreed. I pray it works, I'm going to really adjust my diet and hope that between dificid, diet and s. Boulardi, i will nip this once and for all.. although things haven't been as bad as before, they haven't been great either. I pray this works. Good luck to everyone else trying to beat this nasty bug!
I have not actually seen the Dr, only his NP 😊. Like you, it would be months before I could actually see him. I will keep you posted.
@lindac61 You're lucky you could get in with a gastro within two weeks. I had to wait for two months to get in to see my gastroenterologist. I did get to see his NP after one month. At that time I was having my 3rd relapse and doing the Vanco taper. After I saw the gastroenterologist, we decided that I would do fidaxamicin (Dificid) if I relapsed again. It's an expensive drug. Over $4,000 for 20 pills. My insurance wouldn't pay their share until I had tried vancomycin. Anxious to hear what you find out tomorrow. Wishing you well.
Thank you! Yes, I had gone 3 weeks before going to Dr and finding out I had C-diff. I actually went to a walk in clinic after 4 days and they just said it was a reaction to something I ate!! Told me to do BRAT diet. I could not go to Gastro for over two weeks so I guess I must have a pretty strong case of it.
I know what you mean about dry hands! Washing them all the time in hot water does dry the skin for sure.
When I see the dr this week I will definitely request the Dificid!
@lindac61 I had never even heard of Cdiff before I got it. At first, I thought I had the flu. And then the Ecoli was going around from romaine lettuce. And I always use romaine so I thought for sure it was Ecoli. I waited about 10 days before I ever went to the doctor. By then, the Cdiff really had taken over my body. The 10 days on Flagyl didn't even faze it. And then 10 days on Vancomycin and it came right back. And then 6 weeks on the Vanco pulse and taper. And finally Dificid (fidaxamicin) which I asked my GI to prescribe. If that didn't work, I was ready to do the FMT. I'm amazed now when I hear how many people have had it. And all ages. We have friends whose daughter got it from taking meds for a UTI that turned in to a bladder infection. She a senior in high school. Be sure to bleach and wipe down your bathroom area. The Cdiff spores can live for months. My hands were so dry from hand washing and cleaning products. I'm sorry you have to wait until Monday to get on something. And hopefully, Dificid will work for you.
@linda61 your welcome
