Hysterectomy what to expect afterwards?
Hi tomarrow I see the Doctor at Mayo Clinic Rochester and if I have a radical hysterectomy what are the steps to recovery and how long are you laid up and do you have minimal pain and how long is your hospital stay? Just so much going through my brain want to recover fast cause my Fiancé just found out he has Prostrate Cancer this past Friday and I want to be able to be there for him. He has to to decide what action he is going to do, but waiting for me first to see what is gonna happen? I don’t want him to wait to long he needs to get his cancer taken care of also. Thanks

@cheriels I'm so glad you posted as I had been wondering about your appointment at Mayo.
It sounds like you are very reassured after your appointment with Dr Bakunin-Gamez. Your description of your first appointment is very much like mine was in 2019. While I arrived with questions, my doctor spent so much time explaining what she had read in my reports, her recommendations including a drawing, that I only had a few questions left.
What does your doctor recommend? Your PET/CT is coming up very soon and then your surgery. Are you relieved that this is all happening so quickly and that you have an action plan?
Hi meet with my Doc. Jamie Bakunin-Gamez in Rochester yesterday and she went over my plan for me. I have a Pet Scan/ CT Scan Tuesday Sept. 6th and if she can rearrange some things will be having my Hysterectomy Sept 8th, if not my Hysterectomy will be done Sept 16th. She was very informative and answered all my questions I asked her. She told me not to worry I am in the best place for care of this Cancer, she told me all what she would be removing, had a diagram and explained everything. After talking to her, big weight was lifted off my shoulders. Mayo Rochester is the place to go.
Thank for the info! Hugs and my mind is all over nor forsure what to ask can you help me? Lot of my questions I had on my mind by reading all from others and the answers I got help me a lot?
@cheriels
I did have a PET/MRI scan last year. I don't know the difference between a PET/MRI and PET/CT so please ask your doctor about this and to explain why it's ordered.
I'm very claustrophobic and I did know that the MRI scanner is a long tube you slide into and I figured I'd get very anxious. So I asked for sedation. That helped a lot. If your scan is the CT scan then there is a big open ring that you slide in and out of. I just had a CT for my checkup at Mayo and it was very comfortable and easy for me.
The PET/CT or PET/MRI is done to see if there is cancer anywhere else. Your doctor will want to know that because the results will help guide the treatment. When I had the PET/MRI last year I got the results back very quickly which I appreciated.
Have you written your questions down to ask your doctor? That will help keep you focused and make sure all of your questions get answered.
Thank you will let everyone know in this group how it goes! Did you have to have a PetScan/ PT scan before your radical hysterectomy? Thanks
Thank you!
Thank You
@cheriels I had a radical hysterectomy at Mayo Clinic at Methodist Hospital (now Charlton Bldg.) in Rochester. Everyone I encountered did their best to help me to feel comfortable and taken care of. It was a same day procedure. I checked in very early in the morning, had the procedure mid-morning and was back in our hotel room by late afternoon. When I was in post-recovery my doctor came to room to check in with me and told me what the early pathology results were and then I got the final results a few days later. I was very tired after the surgery and for about two weeks after. It was a robotic laparoscopic procedure so I had only a few incisions on the outside but lots of healing on the inside to do.
You will be taken care of so well at Mayo. Keep the focus on you and your healing and then you will be in a better place to help your fiance with his.
Please let me know how your appointment goes today and what the doctor says. Best wishes to you.
Good luck at your appointment. My thoughts and prayers are with you
Thank you appreciate your response! Hugs
