Hysterectomy what to expect afterwards?
Hi tomarrow I see the Doctor at Mayo Clinic Rochester and if I have a radical hysterectomy what are the steps to recovery and how long are you laid up and do you have minimal pain and how long is your hospital stay? Just so much going through my brain want to recover fast cause my Fiancé just found out he has Prostrate Cancer this past Friday and I want to be able to be there for him. He has to to decide what action he is going to do, but waiting for me first to see what is gonna happen? I don’t want him to wait to long he needs to get his cancer taken care of also. Thanks

@cheriels This is all good news and now it's time to heal. My doctor told me that while I was very well healed on the outside (those teeny tiny incisions) I still had healing to do on the inside where I couldn't see. I had my hysterectomy and follow-up at Mayo Clinic in Rochester and I felt and still feel so cared for. I'm glad you had a good experience and are feeling good. When you go back on October 31 the GYNOncologist will check to see how you are healing and give you information on your subsequent follow-up plan.
When you are feeling ready and healed I'm hoping you'll come back and let me know about your progress and support our other members who are in the same boat as you and me. Is that OK with you?
Gm! It’s been 8 days since my hysterectomy and the only thing left is my vagina. I am doing good and not to much pain only where they made a incision in my bellybutton. I got my lab results yesterday and the two lymph nodes they took did not show any cancer. They said it was Stage 1 cancer/ grade 3. I was so relieved to know that the lymph nodes showed no cancer. I go back Oct. 31st at 11am for a chech-up! I am handling this all so well for being 68 years old. So now it’s only uphill from here. Mayo Clinic Rochester is awesome!
The American cancer society. Go to hyperplasia with atypia. Also the HERS Foundation.
Sophie I'm curious what your source is for that statistic?
@gloriana I think whether you stay over night in the hospital depends on your cancer care team and you. My hysterectomy was scheduled as a same day surgery so I was in at very early in the morning and out at about 4 pm. If there had been any complications or my post-surgical pain could not be controlled I could have stayed overnight. I had my surgery at Mayo Clinic in Rochester. This is a good question to ask your cancer care team - your oncologist. Is there a patient portal where you can write and ask these questions?
I did not have anything special prepared at home other than food in the refrigerator and a few meals frozen ahead of time that we could heat up. Since I had general anesthesia I was fatigued for about a week after my surgery and I knew I would not feel like cooking. Also, I wasn't allowed to drive for about two weeks while I healed. I had very little pain when I arrived home which is amazing.

How are you feeling overall?
What is the time you need to stay in the hospital after the surgery. Also what should I prepare at home after?
Thank you
You are most welecome! Hugs to you my Dear Friend! You will get through this with flying colors like me! If you are having it done in Rochester I had Doc. Bakkum-Gamez and her and her staff and everyone else who took care of me was awesome! They are very caring for you the patient! I had the best care I have ever had! Hugs and you will get through this. Keep me updated! ❤️😘
@gloriana Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect and to our discussion group. You are in good company and will receive lots of support from us. May I ask your diagnosis? My diagnosis was Endometroid adenocarcinoma, Stage 1A, FIGO 1.
Please let me know any questions you have about the surgery or endometrial cancer. I'll answer what I can and I know you'll get answers and support from the others here.
That sounds encouraging. I will be having surgery in three weeks for my endometrial cancer. I will have all what you had removed, too. I appreciate your input because I wasn’t sure what to expect. Thank you.
Plus hyperplasia with atypia takes 10 years to develop to cancer if left untreated. And it can be treated with progestin. Also keep in mind that weight loss helps too.
