How to deal w/intense night pain from total knee replacement surgery.
I had a total knee replacement last June. That recovery wasn't bad. I had my 2nd total knee replacement 12/5/24. The night pain from that surgery has completely worn me out. I have not slept through the night since surgery. I keep hearing that the night pain is "normal" and could last months. But the incredible level of pain is very difficult to accept. I need someone who understands what it is like to go through this nightmare day after day. Just being heard is so important.

What was different between the two surgeries? I’m getting ready to have my TKR. My first was three months ago and was easier then I hoped. Now I’m worried.
I have been going through the same thing for years now. I had bilateral knees done mid 2019. My second knee replacement was with rods a year and a half later due to terrible hyperextension of my legs. I use 5% lidocaine patches on my knees and take hydrocodone 10. Sometimes I supplement with 800 mg of ibuprofen too. Takes the edge off the chronic pain. I also always have my legs up in the recliner chair during the day if I’m not doing anything. I hope this can work for you.
I really appreciated your comments. It was nice to hear someone really listen and try to understand. Nothing seems to help my pain. I wish you the best. I try a lot of different things and will keep trying. I do work on elevating my leg[s] often.
Hi, I had a lot of difficulty sleeping after my bilateral knee replacements done in May 2024. I have problems with insomnia at the best of times and I definitely had difficulties for the first three months after my knee replacements . I would always use my ice machine right before bedtime on both knees plus I used compression sleeves at the recommendation of my sports physician. I also used tramadol at bedtime alternating with Celebrex for the first three months.
I absolutely have no regrets doing my surgery as it was successful as I now am doing much more walking than I could prior to surgery without any pain.
I have had joint and knee pain all my life. Started having surgery at the age of 13. Suffer from chronic joint pain. Was always told would nit be a good candidate for knee replacement. Well I guess with knew technology I did get one this year in April on my right knee. Progress is slow but the pain is horrible. And my leg or knee is oftentimes so hevey. I have no knee cap in my left knee. I know that in the long run this should help improve my quality of life. Im in my 64 and have been dealing with knee problems since I was a small child. Just trying to stay focused and in some real tough days.
I still have night pain at 6 months since TNR. I get very little sleep.
Oddly I did have one month of no night pain. Days are always fine. It is
certainly affecting my life. I need to see my dr. and get a prescription for pain. But worried how long this will go on.
Therenare two main kinds of pain after surgery - physical/anatomical pain that means something is structurally wrong in the knee, and nerve pain, which occurs when the nerves disturbed by surgery need to heal and regenerate.
Can you tell us a little more about your pain? All day, only at night, pinching, stabbing, tingling?
When was the last time you talked to your surgeon about it
No pain at all during the day. It is only in bed at night.
I dread going to bed. I would think a structural problem would also be problematic during the day. I saw the surgeon in Jan. and he said it could go on for about 8 months. He also said to get up and walk around. That does relieve the pain but I would have to be doing that all night long. Hard to desribe the pain but not stabbing, pinching or tingling. More like deep persistent pain which isn’t helped by changing position. But I can stretch out on the sofa comfortably. I will call my surgeon.
I have pain in lower part of my knee all the time. It is pinching and tight band Feel like implant is not the right size. X-ray does not show problem and drs are not listening. It is now three and half year after surgery. Done therapy ; accupucture etc. it is effecting my hip and back badly. Dr response is learn to live with it. I am in worse pain now then before surgeries. Any suggestions?
I had to go back to icing after recovering for months from one of my hip surgeries - it was the only thing that relieved the pain - after several discussions with my PT we concluded the pain was probably in the bone. It finally let up after several months. Just this week, after over 10 years, I have started getting twinges of it again - but the original implant is almost 20 years old - time to let the surgeon take a look and make sure all is well.
