How long does the pain and swelling last after TKR?

Posted by cyndi2013 @cyndi2013, 2 days ago

I am almost 6 months post op, and still have little swelling but quite a bit of muscle pain. Especially along the outside of my knee where the main muscle is. I am gaining some ground on strengthening the muscles and quads, but dang, this fatigue type pain is rough.
And dealing with neuropathy in my foot.
Any one else experience this type of recovery pain?

Here is a very helpful website for you.... gives lots of expert information about knee replacements. One thing to make sure you do is to be gentle with PT. Only push to the point of discomfort - do not "push through the pain". That only makes inflammation worse.
Here is the website : Bonesmart.org
Please make sure you check it out. But do exercises GENTLY but often through the day - no strength building exercises yet. That will come.

I am 8 months TKR and still experiencing neuropathy in my foot. The neurologist said that if this is not better after 2 years, this numbness in my foot will be here to stay. I agree with you that the recovery pain is rough after TKR but gradually I am able to walk more each day and I try to do the stationary bike every day. Stairs are still difficult as are low toilets. Keep working at it and try to get some good sleep. My orthopedic surgeon said that is when we heal. I was a slow healer as I not able to sleep for the first 3 months. Hope you feel better soon.

I agree with the sleep part. I am 7 weeks out. I was no sleeping due to discomfort. My doctor suggested 1 Tylenol Pm and 1 extra strength Tylenol at night. It is working very good so far.
