How do I handle Hip Pain after Prostate Radiation

Posted by agostirl @agostirl, 2 days ago

I am 71 years old and recently had 5 weeks of radiation followed by Brachytherapy (radioactive seeds implanted in the prostate). I'm 30 days into the therapy and my hips are starting to ache badly. So much that it is making walking difficult, especially in the mornings. I am already taking a lot of medications for the cancer, blood pressure and diabetes, so I am looking for other ways to manage the pain. Any suggestions? Thanks. Agostirl.

Have you tried topical CBD cream? Not anything with THC. Or pain patches? If your insurance won't cover the patches, you can buy them at Costco or most pharmacies. Lidocaine 4% as I recall.
Prescription dose might be a bit higher percent. Either might be worth a try. I used sports tape to keep mine in place (if need be). And I'm sorry you are in pain.

@nannybb I appreciate your suggestion. I will look at my local store to see if they have
CBD cream. I cannot do the THC due to other meds. Thanks again.

@agostirl I would not suggest THC. There are some creams out there that are CBD with a small percentage of THC and I would not (myself) even suggest that. I get mine locally here in Oregon and have great success with it on certain parts of my body. I have also combined K-tape with Salonpas pads which are 4% lidocaine. The K-tape adds extra support, like on my knee and also helps keep the pad in place. 🫶

My husband had brachytherapy and external radiation for prostate cancer. After 4 TURP procedures he became incontinent and had so much pain in groin and hips he could not walk. Turns out radiation had eroded his pelvic bone and he was finally diagnosed at Mayo with osteitis pubis after year of seeing several doctors. Will be having surgery in a few weeks

@hrshow I am so sorry to hear about your husband. The pain is not something to laugh at. I am not scheduled for any TURP sessions yet. I am managing the prostate inflamation with medication and T-therapy. I'm hoping to get better use of my hips with a bit of exercise.
Thanks for the input. Ricardo.
