How do I go through 6 weeks radiation and chemotherapy, alone?
I am a 72 year old widow in good health. I had a complete thyroidectomy. There is some inoperable cancer left on my trachea and tiny bit on neck lymph nodes.
I am trying to understand the "how to" of 6 weeks radiation.
Can I live alone?
Will I get so tired that I can't care for myself?
Will I get so tired I can't take the train to my treatment?
I don't know what to expect.
Thanks
Kathleen

Thank you for recent replies.
I am doing very well. I drove myself the first 2 weeks, except chemo day.
Because I have been told side effects kick in week 3, I am paying someone to drive me each day. There is no point in taking chances. Less shopping, funds go to care.
I am finished week 2. Have had 2 chemo treatments of 10 doxorubicin. I have no issues...yet.
Someone mentioned faith. I attend mass each week. There is a Deacon who will visit me if needed.
I pray for all who suffer from cancer and all the Healthcare professionals. May the Lord have mercy on us and help us improve cures.
I’m very lucky that I live in a small town and attend church regularly. It’s the church folks and neighbors that helped me navigate my trial and tribulations. Thanks to my neighbors, church members and even high school classmates, I have made it five years.

1 ReactionKathleen, we joined this forum and were diagnosed about the same time. I am also single and recently relocated home to Texas from Washington, DC. I'm still cultivating community in my new city, so I'm relying on a cadre of folx all over the world in my treatment and recovery. The hardest part for me (and probably anyone) is being vulnerable enough to ask for help. You're strong, tenacious, and resourceful- you've got this. And, you know what? It's okay to cry, get angry, and rejoice all in the same 15 minute span. Peace be with you!

1 ReactionMy best to you! Wonderful attitude and pla!
Thank you everyone. I start Jan21.
I know what to expect. I know what side effects I will and may encounter. The team at MSK is very professional. My role is: eat healthy until I cannot, then high nutrient liquid diet; exercise as best I can; rest and relax; positive mental attitude; pray for children with cancer as I go through this; show up for treatments every day.

1 ReactionI too am so sorry to hear this. I am a 61 one year old female. I am scheduled for a partial thyroidectomy tomorrow morning. In February this year I had my right tonsil removed as a precaution as it was larger than the left one, my ENT did not think we would find cancer but there was. I underwent 33 treatments of radiation only. I drove myself to all the appointments up until the last week. The last week and the 2 weeks after I completed radiation were the hardest. My throat was so so sore that it hurt to even swallow water. I tried the magic mouth wash and it was helpful. Part of my difficulty was that from the second week of radiation my taste was off and nothing tasted good, when there is no joy in eating it becomes that much more difficult to try to eat even soft foods. I was very tired and weak because I wasn’t eating, even drinking protein drinks was awful. I hate to be a a “Debbie downer” but I’m fearful it may be very difficult for you without support, is there a friend or relative who can help out? Or a local organization that may help provide transportation to treatment? You may only need this for the last week or two, that was when my husband stepped in and drove me to treatments.
If you can eat and get adequate nutrition it’s possible you will fair better than I did. I wish you all the best! Just know that the journey is hard, but you will get through it! Sending you hugs

9 ReactionsHi. Thank you for your well wishes. I did ask the oncologist - why not RAI. His response was they need something more aggressive. My cancer is outside the thyroid plastered to my trachea. I am with Sloan Kettering in NYC. They have a reputation for defeating cancer with the first treatments, rather than an iterative approach over time.
The radiation is 5 days, for 6 weeks. The chemo is a very low dose 1 x per week. They found it boosts the radiation.
They have done a brain MRI, CT neck and CT lungs. All will be used as baselines going forward.
hoping for a cure or super treatment for all cancer.
