How can I get by without a hip at all?
My third hip replacement on my left side has been infected since about 2 weeks after it was installed. It's been many years since then and I'm wrecked from fighting the infection. I'm told after it's removed I won't be able to get another one and will have no hip at all. Is there anyone else with no hip. I wonder how it's possible to get around and how the disconnected bone doesn't damage the tissue around it. ???

Hello Trent...I had Girdlestone Procedure (left hip & hardware removal) done 3 years ago and doing pretty well. I get around with a walker or crutches, or hanging onto counters in the kitchen to cook, etc. I can drive, ride spin bike inside house and tricycle outside. If you are on Facebook, there is a group started about 6 months ago called "Girdlestone Procedure Outcomes". We'd love to have you join and there is a lot of great info on there from people across the world who have had it. There's about 60 members. I will say, like myself, have a much better outcome with the surgery than others. It's heartbreaking that any of us have to go through it. I'm 72 and live in Michigan. If you join the group, you can click on my name in there and read about my story resulting in Girdlestone. Wishing you the best!
Hi Trent - yes you can get by without a hip. I had my GP in December 2018 and like Cindy can get by with a walker; sometimes an electric wheelchair for outside treks. Like yourself I was scared and thinking it would be impossible to navigate but I was pleasantly surprised. We are all on individual journeys and we all heal differently though. Please come look at our group and read the posts as there is a lot of information there you might find useful. We do not offer medical advice - we're all just patients in similar situations seeking information. Best of luck to you.
