Hormone therapy for menopause symptoms after DCIS?

Posted by jaegergirl @jaegergirl, Mar 16, 2023

I am a 56 year old female starting menopause and had DCIS / Unilateral Mastectomy- I would like hormone therapy for symptoms but Doctors advise against it. Has anyone else pursed this path? From the research I have done the percentages of increase are so minimal they don’t compare to benefits.

Was your DCIS tested for estrogen/progesterone positivity? If so, and it was shown that the cells were estrogen/progesterone positive, perhaps hormone replacement for menopause is contraindicated. As in, not wanting to feed those cells more hormones. Statistics and risk/benefit are all you really have to go on, but it can be hard to apply in real world settings and how you feel day to day.

I would be very afraid of hormone replacement therapy. At first I thought you were writing about estrogen suppression therapy, which would be the opposite!

Menopause symptoms tend to ease up, in the experience I have had and my friends too, but everyone is different.

I would also ask if your DCIS was driven by estrogen.

I read an article that said doctors should never day "we got it all. Small DCIS is probably low risk but mastectomy does not necessarily mean all cancer cells were removed, from what I have been told.

You could get second or third opinions but I can certainly understand your doc's reluctance. Can you ask about other approaches to menopausal symptoms?

I agree with the other comments @jaegergirl if your cancer cells were driven by estrogen. It would counterproductive to add more estrogen to the body. Many of us here have taken drugs to eliminate any residual estrogen in our bodies to help prevent those cells from growing.
Do you know if your DCIS was estrogen receptor positive?

I would suggest you reconsider taking HRT. I took it in my 50s and wish I had been warned about how it can cause breast cancer. I had a lumpectomy last summer [grade one estrogen positive] and tried anastrozole to suppress estrogen, but had to quit after 6 months due to joint pain and other very unpleasant side effects, including weight gain. My oncologist is fine with my quitting the anastrozole. He will continue to follow me by blood tests and an office visit every 4 months.
