Did you have Home Health Nurse for recovery post surgery?

Posted by polianad22 @polianad22, Nov 16, 2022

Hello beautiful souls,

I had the surgery on Monday unilateral mastectomy on my left breast. They removed 4 sentinel nodes and waiting for the results. Everyone was impecabil at Memorial Sloan Kettering from the surgeon, plastic surgeon and nurses. One thing that I have to comment is that they sent you home right after the surgery, on the second day, 24 hours after the surgery. My husband is doing the drains for me, but I would like to have a home health nurse to come and check out my incision. It's very hard to find one. The hospital put an order in, but they couldn't find anything. Do you have any recommendations? I live in New Paltz, NY.

Please see a photo with my aesthetic flat surgery that my plastic surgeon did for me.

You must still be very uncomfortable if you had surgery Monday.
I also had a mastectomy in NY many years ago. I think I had one more day in the hospital than you did. I had to manage the drains myself. I felt I was expected to be “brave”. I did not like to go home and deal with this myself. I remember thinking that I should have had a visiting nurse also.
Does your suture line feel warm and tender- worrying about an infection? It looks good.
It is difficult to arrange these things yourself. Maybe check back with the hospital.
When are they taking the drains out?

Thank you. The hospital tried to arrange for a nurse to visit me once per week, but the agencies refused it.

I don't know when they are taking the drains out. Meeting the surgeon on Tuesday.

My husband does the drains for me. I don't have anything at the incision area. Some swollen veins or lymph nodes on the upper left side. Is it normal?

I walked two hours yesterday and prepared a beautiful lunch for my family. PT exercises.

My country doesn't let you go till you remove the drains. They keep you in the hospital. Although I feel that it is very manageable, I would like to have the nurse check my area, my swellings.

The hospital keeps track via Portal. I write there every single day about my state. They asked about swelling around incision, which I don't have. But no questions about swelling in other areas.

@polianad22,
I'm sorry that you were unable to get home care to help with the drains. Thank goodness your husband is will to help. He may appreciate some of the tips others shared in this related discussion:

It is dependent on the total measured flow in a day. It may vary per person. Your doc should guide you. For me, one drain was removed in less than a couple of weeks. The 2nd drain, I believe I left in approximately a week longer. I did a few more days than needed on the 2nd drain to be sure.

Thank you everyone. I am doing well. Walking every single day outside for one hour. My husband still does the drains. I prepared some lunches and dinner for my family. Sleeping on my back and my right side.

Waiting for the results after the surgery.
