Hernia Surgery

Posted by benjiron23 @benjiron23, Jan 10 8:50am

I’m having hernia surgery this Friday and wanted to see if anyone could provide me with what kind of experiences they had pre op and post op. The only other time I’ve been under GA is when I had my wisdom teeth removed but that was years ago. I’m having a lot of anxiety building up before this procedure and am hoping other individuals had decent experiences they’d be comfortable sharing with me. I think the worst part for me is knowing they’ll be putting a breathing tube in me while I’m out.

Hey Ben I would not worry about it. I'm sure they'll fix you up and in the meantime, enjoy your trip to la la land!

Ask for something to relax you prior to going into surgery prep. I did. It helped a lot. I have had multiple surgeries since 2000 when I was 44. Two were transplants, one was a burst vein in my stomach and then the hernia. I was told it would be relatively quick but due to scaring they had to put in a 1 sq foot mesh and it took much longer. They did it by Laparoscopy.

Thank you all for the responses I wanted to give a quick update.

I had the surgery this morning around 10AM. They discovered a bilateral hernia on the other side so he used robotic to repair both of them. My surgeon said the repair went extremely well. I just remember going to sleep and then waking up in the recovery room. I’m hoping that this will help somebody else searching forums to let them know there’s nothing to worry about. Your hernia will never get better and these doctors handle these procedures daily.

Good idea. Ask for a drug called Versed (sp?). This is the drug used for a colonoscopy. In lower doses, it won't put you to sleep but will take the edge off any pre-surgery nerves. Good luck! You'll be fine!

Hello, I saw your post and your situation sounds similar to mine, I have not had a real surgery under anesthesia before and am a bit nervous. My surgery is schedule for next Friday. I am curious how your post op surgery was? How long was your recovery period? Any side effects etc? Thanks so much!

It's normal to feel anxious, but many have positive experiences with hernia surgery. Pre-op, focus on relaxation techniques, and post-op, take it easy and follow doctor's orders. You're in good hands! Sending positive vibes for a smooth procedure and speedy recovery!

Hello Dave,

For starters, how old are you? I think that plays a significant part in recovery. I’m 30 years old so I believe my recovery was probably better than others that were older. Also, what type of method are they using for surgery? Open? Robotic/laparoscopic? Mine was laparoscopic so it was minimally invasive. The first two days post op were the worst. It wasn’t excruciating or anything like that, but I found it very difficult to find a good sleeping position so I was back and forth from the recliner. I didn’t take OxyContin after the first two days and went straight to ibuprofen. Don’t stress this procedure. These doctors literally perform hernia surgeries every day.

Kim,

I had no eating issues. Doctor said I had no diet restrictions. I had Chick-fil-A 2 hours after my surgery. My biggest advice is try to avoid taking pain killers as best as you can. The last thing you need is to be constipated after hernia surgery. I recommend getting stool softeners because you DO NOT want to strain on the toilet after getting hernias repaired.
