Heartburn at night

Posted by ead @ead, 2 days ago

In spite of prilosec before breakfast and dinner, plus 3 tums at bedtime I still wake up with heartburn and a tongue that frequently feels a burning sensation in the morning. I sleep with my bed raised. I can’t sleep on my left side due to shoulder issues. I alternate during the night, back and right side. Endoscopy showed normal stomach with a tiny hernia. He said it’s not big enough for a repair. Esophagus showed some scarring and Dr. said he stretched it. I seem to cough every time I eat. Input or ideas anyone?

I'm not a doctor, but it sounds like GERD.
I had it pretty bad for years.
It went away after I was diagnosed with sleep apnea and started using a CPAP machine.
Have you had a sleep study?

Have you been to an ent? In addition to esophageal dismotility which you may have. Specific gi test for this I also have paralyzed right vocal cord. Causes constant dry cough. Comes and goes. The test is just a tiny tube down your throat. No big deal. There are meds to help both of these conditions. Took them several years to figure out what I had. In addition to. Having Mals. Good luck. You’ll get the help you need. You just have to push for it.

I can't offer an answer, just here to say you are not alone. If I sleep on my right side (the worst side to sleep on) or flat on my back, or even flat on my left side, I will wake up coughing and have a sore throat. If I return to sleeping on my back (upright like sitting up) the soreness/coughing goes away. I suspect it is laryngopharyngeal reflux (Dr. Jamie Koufman has a good web site with free information). I find that Gaviscon Advance alginate, or sucking on the antacid tablet/cough drop, help. As someone else mentioned, I suppose sleep apnea might also be a cause, since your mouth would be open a lot. Good luck!

Have not had a sleep study. However it has been suggested to tape over the mouth if you are a nighttime mouth breather. I have tried that and it took care of waking up with a dry mouth, but not the heartburn.

Yes I did. I followed Dr. Jonathan Aviv in that it was low acid and whole foods; I think it is a little more strict than Koufman's. I am not one who does the right thing all the time, I have opted for doing mostly the right thing. I can say, from following the diet strictly for three months, that it worked for me, and I do feel better when I stay on it. If you want a lot of low acid meal ideas/recipes you can sign up with https://www.facebook.com/groups/199013402360712, the Acidwatcher Diet Warriors Support Group. It's strictly about recipes, no medical discussions.
