hearing aid incompatibility with Iphone and Prius Bluetooth
I have a 2012 Toyota Prius V which will last me another 10 years. Unfortunately, the bluetooth in the car stopped being compatible with my Iphone GPS audio a few years ago. Apparently, the Iphone updates regularly but the bluetooth on my Prius does not. At some point, the two parted ways. After many discussions with Toyota and Apple Care, a workaround was suggested. Turn off the Bluetooth on the phone and I can get audio on my Google GPS.
That worked fine. Then I tried to get new hearing aids. The only hearing aids which will work for me have bluetooth. They also all have rechargeable batteries so the batteries cannot be removed. The GPS audio on my Iphone will not work if the hearing aids are in the car.
I spent a month trying every possible solution. None worked. Since I only had the new hearing aids for a one month probation period, I had to return them and go without.
Surely, I am not the only person with this dilemma. If anyone has any thoughts or solutions, I would appreciate them. I have a 90% hearing loss in one ear (acoustic neuroma) and 30% in the other. I have two long road trips planned. Going without GPS is not an option. Buying a new car is not a viable solution.
Thank you. Jan

Please excuse if what I offer is complete nonsense, but here goes. I was able to program my iPhone to direct me to my location and it delivered instructions directly into my ears. As this was quite a while ago, I do not remember if it also showed on phone screen.
Thank you. This is true for me if I am someone else's car. In my own car, it is incompatible with the bluetooth in the Prius. My choices are to disable the bluetooth in my Prius which prevents me from having hands free phone calls or go without hearing aids so I can continue to access audio on my gps on my phone (with bluetooth turned off on the phone). I choose the latter, unfortunately. I spend considerable time in my car and I need to be able to make/receive phone calls and my gps.
I skip my car's GPS altogether, and rely on the Google maps app on my iPhone. Audio is streamed--as all phone calls are on my iPhone--directly to my Oticon hearing aids (2018 models). Works like a charm. Happy travels.
That is what is supposed to happen on mine and does on someone else's car. But my car bluetooth interferes with the audio on my Iphone. Without hearing aids, I do what you do. But with hearing aids, they lock into my car bluetooth which can not be updated and conflicts with my phone audio. I can't afford to purchase a new car to be able to wear hearing aids.
I'm curious as to why the Prius would not be able to update. Thinking that in a car of that vintage, BT was pretty new then, and it's come a long way since then, so it may be a dead end street.
This would be an interesting dilemma to present to both the car dealership and to an audiologist to see if there was some way to make it work.
Keep us posted if you find a solution.
Yes, I agree. I presented to my audiologist and the Toyota dealer. No solution. Unfortuantely.
I have a 2021 Prius and have had some similar issues. After experimenting a bit, I found that if I am listening to music on my USB port, the audio from the Apple Maps is silent. If I am listening to an audiobook or music from my iPhone through bluetooth the Apple Maps audio comes through fine on the Prius. It doesn’t matter whether or not I’m wearing my HAs.
If I want to use ApplePlay, I have to attach a charging cord.
My previous Prius was a 2007 and my iPhone had to be attached with a charging cord for any audio to work. No bluetooth.
