Has anyone tried TCM as a treatment for OP?

I’ve recently been diagnosed with OP, and really don’t want to go on any of the recommended drugs due to their side effects. After much research, I decided to try Traditional Chinese Medicine, in particular XianLingGubao (XLGB), along with acupuncture and muxibustion. Has anyone tried TCM?

I'm very interested in how this works for you. Is XLGB traditional Chinese herbal medicine? Please share more as you can and will you share your dexa scores as well?

@gravity3 Yes, XLGB is a Chinese patent medicine that is used to treat OP, and has been approved by the (Chinese) State and Drug Administration. According to what I’ve read it’s used in many countries as the primary treatment for OP, and has been proven to be effective. However, each paper appears to be a meta analysis and points out the need for good clinical trials. I do know that there are some reports of possible liver damage as one of the side effects.
My endocrinologist does not agree with my decision, but as he put it “We’ll see.” I started the XLGB capsule about 5 weeks ago. I feel that the side effects of western treatment are far more probable.
Today, I had a previously scheduled appointment with my hematologist. I mentioned that I had started TCM, and immediately he went to a Chinese medical website, and checked that XLGB would not interact with any of my other medications. He did point out that a side effect is possible liver damage and that it is recommended to have liver functions tested. Since I have blood work done every few months, it’s not an issue. He never heard of this treatment and found it interesting. I asked him if he thought it was safe for me to go this route, and he said to give it a try. Today’s blood work was good. I’ll keep you informed.

This is very interesting information. Thanks, Molly! I would like to try it too, and it will be interesting to compare results. However, where did you buy it? If it is used in several countries different possibilities have to exist for buying it.
I have checked right now, and XLGB is not among the lists of medicines available in the country where I live, Spain.

@melia7 Melia, please don’t just order XLGB on line. Acupuncture and moxibustion are also known to improve OP. I first found an acupuncturist nationally board certified in acupuncture and herbal medicine. She ordered the XLGB from a dispensary in California. You want to make sure that the brand is safe by having stringent quality control, and lab testing for heavy metals, contaminants and banned pesticides. You would also want to make sure that there will not be any interaction with any meds you may be taking. If you decide you would like to try this route, please find a licensed acupuncturist to work with.

Thanks for your warning. It appears that it is difficult to find a qualified acupuncturist in Europe. I have met by chance one who moved from the US where one has to be educated first as a doctor, and then as acupuncturist (in total about 7 years). But she lives now in another country. In Norway where I lived before, one has to participate in 1 month course on acupuncture, and then can open a practice.
