Has anyone had Shockwave Regenerative Treatment?

Posted by tthib @tthib, 1 day ago

I am considering shockwave regenerative treatment for numbness down the sciatic nerve path from my lower back to my heel resulting from surgery in Jan 2022 for stenosis and partial discectomy that was causing debilitating pain. The pain is relieved but the surgeon stated the numbness is from the fact that he had to highly manipulate the nerve to get to and clean away the stenosis in lumbar 4&5. The numbness interferes with proper muscle function creating knots and spasms. I work hard to manage it with regular massage and exercise but it’s worrisome as I age that it will worsen.
Has anyone experienced anything like this and any results from shockwave therapy?

Hello @tthib, Welcome to Connect. There have been members who have talked about shockwave treatment for other conditions but not sure I've seen any comments on any type of regenerative shockwave treatments. Here's a search link that lists the other discussions and comments from members if you would like to scan through them while you wait for other members to respond - https://connect.mayoclinic.org/search/?search=Shockwave%20treatment.

There are also a few comments on Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy that may be more similar to what you mentioned - https://connect.mayoclinic.org/search/?search=Extracorporeal+Shockwave+Therapy.

I think the therapies mostly address the pain and I'm not sure if they will do anything for the numbness. Do you have any pain or is it just for the numbness that you are trying to find something that will help?

Hi @httb,
I have done the Shockwave treatment several times, for different reasons. I use it both to stimulate nerve growth and also to deal with unhappy muscles. For a nerve to be happy it also needs to glide. So I do the combination of the above and it has worked for my trigeminal neuralgia and neuropathy. Ultrasound has also been used to make my nerves happy. I will answer questions responses may not be immediate.

I am interested in hearing more about the effect on neuropathy. I am fortunate, I no longer experience pain, just numbness in my feet.

Hello,
Sorry for what you're going through. I personally have large fiber peripheral neuropathy and numbness and tingling are part of it among many other things. And no, I've never gone through shockwave treatment. I suggest you really research it prior to gong through it.
Wish you best of luck,
gus

Thank you so much for your reply. It sounds like shockwave therapy combined with ultrasound has worked for you to restore feeling to nerves that had gone numb ~ once the treatment has worked does numbness return after a time requiring repeated treatment?
