Has anyone had minimal side effects from Reclast

Posted by aspirecreative @aspirecreative, 1 day ago

I now can't remember if I asked this already. I see so many scary reports on long-term side effects from Reclast. It has been on the market a long time. I am wondering if those who had minimal side effects and also good results can weigh in. Thank you!

I've had two infusions and will have third and final one this summer. I've had no side effects. My dexa scan this past summer showed improvement in spine and small improvement in femur. My only regret is that I wasn't aware of Evenity or Prolia before I started Reclast and my endocrinologist at that time never explained the options. My understanding is that the first two are bone building and the last, Reclast, is bone maintenance. I now have a new endo and we're taking it from where I am. I understand that I'll be taking a "drug holiday" after this last infusion, and I don't know where we'll go from here. I'm active, strength train, take calcium, D3 with K and MK7 daily.

I had three years of Reclast infusions with absolutely no side effects. However, I also didn't see any improvement in my T scores.

I had 3 years of Reclast with no side effects. I did have some improvement in bone density, although not dramatic. Wish I had done an anabolic first, but I wasn’t offered them and didn’t yet realize how important it was to do my own research so I could self-advocate.

I've had one infusion; almost zero side effects and I go in mid-April or May to discuss upcoming bloodwork. Not sure he will do a DEXA (apparently, we will discuss "need" at spring appointment). Had one DEXA in 2024, doc sent me to an endo, Fosamax about a year, another DEXA in 2025 to see where I was at (a little improvement but not enough) then Reclast last July. Bethieb I also really regret the path I've been on - like you I had no idea of bone building drugs; Reclast was the first one offered, it scared me a lot, so we tried Fosamax. Doc did mention he did not like Prolia, as he said you are on it for life. Also been on mega dose of Vitamin D2 for 2 years, and 1200 calcium a day and I added Vitamin K although doc said, "no proven benefit". One doc I saw said too much calcium. They all have different ideas on how to treat. Then you read about mega dosing of vitamin D being used short term until D is up to proper levels (mine is); but so far, no indication of me ever coming off it. Sorry so wordy but I can't imagine getting another infusion even though I did well with it basically (the worry is about possible problems down the road) if my numbers (provided I get a DEXA!) haven't greatly improved; what's the point of these meds if they don't help?

@wondering1 I also don't think I did this in the right order, but I had 4 years of Fossomax which is like Reclast, and lost some BD in the last 2 years, so switched to Evenity which is an anabolic. I had 15% gain in my spine from Evenity, and just maintained in hip and femur. Now starting Reclast.

@aspirecreative , it's very reassuring that you had such good gains with Evenity even after taking anti-resportives for 4 years. Did you take a drug holiday in between stopping Fosamax and starting Evenity, and if so, for how long?

I'm also curious about how many doses of Reclast they are planning for you following Evenity. Is it just the 1 infusion?
