Anyone had Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection for residual Colon Cancer?

After finishing Folfox Treatment for rectal Cancer there is still a residual polyp remaining which the surgeon suggested the surgeon suggested the surgery which would leave mom with a colostomy bag. After talking some more about alternative options since biopsy was negative and CEA blood level had dropped, he suggested there was another option called Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection - where during a Colonoscopy procedure they scoop/cut out the remaining polyp and then perform pathology to determine if any cancer below the polyp or not. Hoping for the best and wanted to see if anyone else had been through this procedure. Thanks!

@mjdavey36, I see that @johnpug mentioned having an endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) a while back and may have experience to share.

Did you mom and her surgeon decide to go with the ESD?

Thank you Colleen! Yes the decision was made to do the ESD in a few weeks.

I had a related procedure--an EMR --to remove a large colon polyp. As expected, the preparation wasn't fun. The procedure itself seemed like a regular colonoscopy. I was given an iv sedative and, when I woke up less than an hour later, it was done. I went home shortly after with no side effects. I had a follow up six months later to check the margins and be sure they got everything--which they had. This procedure can replace invasive colon resection surgery so I feel lucky that it was available. As always, be sure you select a doctor with lots of experience doing the procedure. I believe it's pretty difficult to perform and requires lots of training. My doctor (at UCSF) specializes in it.

Thanks so much @brownsf . Great to hear that you had success with it. My surgeon did reccomend a highly trained surgeon in NYC with Sloane Kettering. I also feel lucky that this is an option and am hoping to have positive results as you did and avoid a big surgery. It seems to be a new option and hopefully will be more common.

@jenmo

How did it go?

Thanks for asking! It went great! They were able to take out the residual tissue and we are waiting on pathology but are feeling very good about it.

May I ask was it Nishimura? And do you have pain after with BM? How long did you have to stay in New York? Any other helpful tips for someone about to do it at Sloane Kettering, flying in from California? It’s very expensive and tricky to stay there

Yes it was Nishimura - highly recommend! MSK website has hotel deals and parking if needed. Only had to stay overnight at the hospital - we live about 90 minutes away. If you stick to the liquid diet and then go to soft diet after - I didn't have any pain. MSK staff was really great - the app makes things easy too.

Thank you so much for replying! I’m so glad it went well for you. Even the discounted hotels on the MSK site are $400-500 a night at least. They said ideally stay for 7 days, but at least 4-5. Do you feel that’s really necessary from what you just went through? Can I get away with 2-3 nights? Could you have sat on a 6 hour plane ride and then 2 hour car ride a few days after? Thank you again

Yikes that's alot of days. have you looked into Airbnbs - that could offer a weekly rate. Fortunately, we did not need to go back to the Hospital after the 1 night stay. There was some blood one day that I noticed and they said if it happens again return to the hospital, but it did not. Also staying in NJ or outside of NYC could be more reasonable. What are your dates? I think I could have handled the plane and car ride 2 - 3 days later. Maybe upgrade yourself to First Class on the way back and save the hotel stay - lay down would be nice on the plane if possible. What part of CA are you coming from?
