Has anyone felt sad/teary while taking Wellbutrin/bupropion?

Posted by truly520 @truly520, 6 hours ago

I have been taking this medication for months. I went from 150 to 250 to 300 and I’m still very teary/verge of crying much of the time. Is this a possible side effect?

Hi, @truly520 - how frustrating to be taking buproprion (Wellbutrin) for months and be still experiencing feeling teary.

Here is some Mayo Clinic information on this medication that may be useful, including side effects:

- Bupropion (oral route) https://www.mayoclinic.org/drugs-supplements/bupropion-oral-route/description/drg-20062478

I will say that I take this medication personally, and I started probably 15 years ago. The ramp up time to get up to my dose on this and then for my body to adjust was bumpy.
I would not call my mental health perfectly stable during this time (nothing crazy, but all over the board).

Fortunately, the pharmacist who filled my medication warned me it could be a shaky ride for my body to become used to this medicine. He said that acclimation could last up to 5 months or so, but then the medication would very likely work for me.

It did. When my body leveled out, maybe at about 5 months after starting it, the buproprion worked really well. My doctor did have to go up to 450 mg to get all the effect needed. I still take it, though a slightly lower dose.

Have you had the chance to talk to your doctor about how you are doing lately? If so, what did he or she say?

@lisalucier thank you so much. My dosage was just increased and the weepies came on stronger after that. I’ve messaged my doctor through their portal but haven’t heard back yet, so I went down to the dosage I was taking prior until I hear from her.

@lisalucier
I was put on AUVELITY and it’s the first major depressive disorder drug which was developed in 60 years.
It has saved my life.
I was constantly having tears nonstop and now I’m able to function.

I take 45mg in the morning and 45 mg when I go to bed. It is a medicine that has to be taken twice a day.
