Title: Ongoing Throat Tightness & Right-Sided Discomfort 3 Months Post-ERCP — Looking for Insight

Hello everyone,

I’m reaching out because I’ve been struggling with persistent symptoms for several months, and despite multiple tests, I still don’t have clear answers. I had an ERCP with sphincterotomy a little over 3 months ago for suspected Sphincter of Oddi dysfunction. Before the procedure, all my labs and ultrasounds were normal, and the issue was only found through an MRCP and CT. They classified it as SOD 2.

Since the surgery, I haven’t felt fully back to normal. My main symptoms are:
• Right-sided discomfort that sometimes feels like stiffness in my neck, then shifts to soreness in my lower back or upper right buttock area.
• Persistent bloating
• During my birth control placebo week, I experience withdrawal headaches and increased body sensitivity.
This week I noticed a new symptom: are:
• A throat tightness/lump sensation, especially after eating (no burning, not typical reflux).
I’ve gone to the ER multiple times. CT scans, MRIs, X-rays, and ultrasounds have all come back normal, according to the doctors. Recent urine tests repeatedly showed hematuria, but cytology was normal. My gallbladder ejection fraction was 51% in July.

Despite all this, I still feel something is off. Sometimes after eating, I get a strange pulling or discomfort in my right side that can radiate to my back. It’s hard to know whether this is GI-related, gallbladder dysfunction, nerve/muscle sensitivity from the procedure, or something else.

I’m currently waiting to see another specialist, but in the meantime I’m wondering if anyone has experienced:
• Throat tightness after ERCP or GI procedures
• Gallbladder dysfunction with a “borderline” HIDA scan (EF around 50%)
• Right-sided nerve/muscle symptoms post-surgery despite normal imaging

Any insight, similar experiences, or suggestions for next steps (such as HIDA vs repeat MRCP vs urology follow-up) would be so appreciated.

Thank you so much for reading — this has been a long and confusing journey, and I’d be grateful to hear from anyone who’s been through something similar.

Hi, @naomi0826. Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. Having persistent symptoms with no clear answers despite many tests would be frustrating.

What did the surgeon who performed the sphincterotomy say about these symptoms? What kind of specialist will you be seeing next?
