Has anyone else used Naltrexone HCL for chronic pain?

Posted by gramham @gramham, 2 days ago

First of all let me say I am 88 years young. I have chronic pain in lower back, upper back, neck you name the part and I have pain there. I also have neurophy pain. My Primary Care Doctor started me on Naltrexone HCL 50mg. I cut it in half so I take 25mg at night. It has helped me so much. I have had so meny cortisone injections and have gained over 25 pounds. I know that Naltrexone is used for drug and alcohol addiction and has now been used for chronic pain. Any thoughts? Has anyone else had experience with this medication? I know it is not a opiod nor is it addictive.

gramham, Hey There! I was put on this for my Thyroid and Fibomyaliga. While I felt better, I had
headaches on the lowest dose and had to come off. I tried it again for Long Covid and same thing happened.

I am so glad it is helping you. It does help a lot of people.

Prayers & Blessings.....

Thank you so much for your encouragement. I'm sorry it didn't work for you. I still hurt in my lower back, but other than there, I feel so good.
That covid left so meny of us with long term issues. I pray that you find something that will help you also!

I am no expert but that's a very high dose for chronic pain...I just started it at 1.5 mg..It needed to be compounded because of the low dose. I will possibly titrate up to 4.5mg if my doctor advises. It is not addictive.

@kdks99 Yes, that is a very high dose for chronic pain. I started at 0.25 mg after stopping Percocet 7 days prior. It was a difficult transition and the LDN (Low-Dose Naltrexone) was helpful except that I had an adverse reaction to the medication, my blood pressure sky-rocketed. But, yes, in terms of dosing, 25 mg seems to me to be an extremely high dose. And, if it helps, that's fantastic. Best of luck to you!!

I am just starting today. 1.5 mg day titrate to 4.5 per day within 6 weeks. For all the following conditions: chronic pain, chronic neuropathy, severe rosacea, scarring alopecia and rheumatoid arthritis. All these conditions are, in my case, caused by chronic inflammation. I get some control with prescription meds, but not enough. I am hoping LDN works and I can find a dose that is right for me. My drs did advise that in some cases 10-30 mg can be compounded to get the right dose. Your dr knows your diagnosis and what meds your already taking vs what you've tried. So your dose may seem high to some here. But, there are those who have great benefit from higher doses. I will try 4.5 mg for 4 months, if I'm getting benefit and no side effects I may try to go higher to lower or eliminate some of the prescription meds. It will take time and trial/error. Good luck on your journey.

Thank you monicaboc for replying. The comments had me questioning. But my bottle does say 50 MG HLC and I was instructed to cut them in half. I have had spinal surgery twice, kypoplasti on several discs along with compression fractures that can't be fixed, a pinched nerve in my neck, left shoulder rotater cuff repaired, left hip replaced, now I have a tear in the right rotater cuff. I know this is just a cover up medication. But I do not want pain medication that makes me blurrie eyed or sitting around in a chair all day. I do not want any more surgeries at my age. Besides all this I have COPD,

Given the extent of your injuries, I am sure the higher dose is warranted. Lyrica really helped me but the GI side effects were so severe I ended up on 3 medications just to combat the GI effects. I hope LDN works well for both of us! I'll post again after 6-8 weeks on it to give an update.

There are many of us who take low-dose naltrexone—usually 5 mg or less—and have good results. Check out the Low-Dose Naltrexone Research Trust website or Facebook group for lots of good information.
