Hand pain

Posted by ginnyjm @ginnyjm, 1 day ago

Has anyone had an inflamed tendon in your hand? I was seeing my PT yesterday anyway & asked him about the pain/swelling in my thumb area. He thought it’s an inflamed tendon & recommended icing it 3 times a day. I’m just wondering if I need to see an orthopedic? Thanks for any advice!

Yes, I have. The condition was called De Quervain's tendinitis. It was so terribly painful that I could not use my hand at all. It required surgery.
Maybe the icing will take care of your pain but if it continues to hurt, you could consider seeing an orthopedic surgeon.

I'm having both thumbs and a few finger and wrists from bracing myself during a fall. The chiropractor can adjust the joints and I'm pain free for a few days. I'm considering cortisone injections, but they can cause degeneration of the cartilage.
An xray of the joint would show arthritis or gout, but won't image the tendon, but then you'd know.
Unless you recognize that you've been overusing the thumb with some task or damaged it like I did with a fall, you'd just as well not wait to see a doctor.
It's impossible to pick anything up without that opposing thumb.

Thanks to everyone who responded! After starting to ice my thumb/wrist area on Monday, the pain has gotten considerably better! I’m able to pick up things without dropping them or having as much pain. This is a great community to vent, share & learn - what a blessing!
