Fructose malabsorption

Posted by jayjjj @jayjjj, Dec 5, 2017

I was diagnosed with fructose malabsorption as well as lactose intolerance. Because i had my gallbladder removed i also can’t over eat fat, but I can have some. I’m just having such a difficult time figuring out what I can eat. After Christmas I’m going to try an elimination diet I️ read about, which is basically meat, poultry, fish, white potatoes, white rice , green beans and zucchini. I would really like to try and figure it out another way if anyone has suggestions.

Hello @jayjjj and welcome to Mayo Connect!

I am sorry to hear of your fructose malabsorption and lactose intolerance. That certainly makes eating more difficult, doesn't it? I also have lactose intolerance and it does take a lot of trial and error to find out how much of a dairy product I can eat without having symptoms.

I did a little research on the internet and found some articles about the fructose malabsorption, https://www.mayoclinic.org/fructose-intolerance/expert-answers/FAQ-20058097 and http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0002822306017044. As you read these you might get some ideas.

As this is your first post, we would enjoy getting to know you better. If you are comfortable sharing more about yourself could you tell us, how these problems were first diagnosed? Were you seeing a gastroenterologist or other health practitioner? Did your doctor offer you any diet recommendations?

As we share our experiences, we all learn from each other!

This is an update on my post. I’ve been on the elimination diet now for 10 days and my symptoms have greatly improved. Fingers crossed that I can pinpoint the foods that upset my digestive system.

That is so good to hear, @jayjjj! Thank you for letting the community know.

I'd like to introduce you to @concernedmtnmom @coffeelatte @saucy @poppy73 @clemlaa, as they have written about the elimination method and/or fructose malabsorption; I hope they will share their insights with you as well.

Do you find the diet to be quite restrictive? How do you decide which foods to exclude?
