First mammogram results have me nervous- should I be?

Posted by ednolb22 @ednolb22, Sep 21, 2023

Had my first mammogram today. I am 40, and on HRT. I had a bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy in 2019 after I tested positive for the same BRCA mutation that my sister did. She passed in 2021 from stage 4 ovarian cancer.

I went in today for a lump that I had found a couple of months ago, and finally got brave to go for my first mammogram. the results talk about so many other things aside from the lump. Now I am waiting for the breast center to call back to schedule further testing.

“ Findings: Possible architectural distortion with associated focal asymmetry and calcifications in the upper outer anterior left breast on the implant displaced views. Calcifications in the far medial right breast, seen on the non implant displaced CC view and partially included on the implant displaced CC view. These are not seen on the MLO views probably due to location. Patient reports a lump in the medial aspect of the right breast. Further evaluation with diagnostic evaluation including ultrasound is necessary.”

Does any of the things listed sound familiar to anyone- should I be nervous? I am super anxious about all of it! Thanks in advance.

Did they give you a BIRADS score? Hope you can get the ultrsound soon! Often it is a scare, but it is so hard to wait.

It is hard for a non-clinician to interpret radiology reports. And seeing it is your 1st mammogram, they do not have previous images to compare to. There is not much info about a lump and they are recommending an ultrasound to further evaluate lump you felt. The ultrasound gives radiologist better images of certain spot.

Hopefully you will get appt soon so can get results soon. Based on those results, you can have discussion with your provider if additional tests needed (breast and ovaries) and your risk based on BRCA mutation.

No score yet. I’m scheduled now for a 3D mammogram for “bilateral abnormalities” and an ultrasound of right breast where lump is. It’s about the size of an almond; wasn’t there 6 months ago and has grown in size

Thanks Laurie. I’m so scared after what my sis went through- we both tested + for same BRCA mutation, which increased my ovarian cancer odds to 1 in 3…thus getting my tubes and ovaries removed. I haven’t told my husband or my mom; I’m waiting until I have definite results. I don’t want to scare them for nothing…it’s been a rough go!!

@ednolb22 The waiting game is so hard! I'm glad you had ovaries and tubes out. Wise choice. So sorry to hear about your sister. I lost my brothers to cancer. So hard to lose siblings.

The hopeful news I see is that they ordered an ultrasound next rather than a biopsy so they must still be hopeful it's something benign. Praying that you have good results. Please keep us posted.

Sorry to hear your concerns and fears. This is how it is when we are faced with a questionable MAMMO… try to take a breath and wait for actual information.

Additionally, I would definitely be requesting an MRI. A mammo never picked up 2 sizeable tumors ( in one breast) although I had a symptom. I persisted until an MRI was done.

Best to you 🌸 hope you get some good news.

@ednolb22, how are you doing? Did you discuss the results of your mammogram with your doctor yet? Will you have further testing?

Just had my diagnostic mammogram today. Results required bilateral ultrasound; they found a mass in each breast (one was the one I found). Now the biopsies are scheduled for Oct 17. This waiting game is no fun!
