First Lupron shot today, 28 days radiation in 2 months, 4+3=7; advice?

Posted by umpquaman @umpquaman, Apr 11 9:57pm

10/12 samples were bad; PET scan clean other than prostate. I am 65 years old. My father passed at 72 from this after an 8 year battle, but his was more advanced with Agent Orange as another factor.
I appreciate any useful advice and insights from those who are ahead of me on this journey. God bless you.

Hey @umpquaman
Welcome to the club no one wants to join. I took a different ADT med called Orgovyx, but, likely the same net results. My biggest piece of advice is watch your diet and keep busy/moving. ADT meds as I'm sure you were told drop your testosterone to extremely low levels, it's tough to burn any fat in this condition. So best bet is don't add any diet wise. (...all things in moderation of course, including moderation)

A lot of folks here turn to exercising to help mitigate the side effects of the meds. A lot of walkers, weight lifting, rowing etc.. in our group. It helps keep some muscle tone, burns some excess calories and generally makes you feel better. (I think it also helps me sleep better).

The radiation I had was at the salvage levels (likely less than you will recieve) but they still caused fatigue. You'll likely be asked to show up with a full bladder and empty bowels. That can be a challenge for some. For me, what worked was getting an early appointment say 9 ish, get up have a cup of coffee, morning constitutional then drank a bunch of water. Off to get zapped then breakfast in the parking lot and off to the gym. After gym it was lunch and then a nap! My brain works best with routine, this helped a great deal. Also, seems quite a few folks keep working through this period, my profession doesn't allow it, so I had time to do it this way.
I'll let others include things like Space Oar etc.., at my radiation levels the RO didn't think there was any reason for it.
Best of Luck to you!

web265 has all good advice. My diagnosis two years ago was very similar and I just had my fourth (and last I think) six-month Lupron shot in February. Same radiation. With SpaceOAR or similar. Suggest early morning radiation if possible - just more convenient. Intensity of side effects vary considerably with the individual. Mine were not as bad as some reports. Joint and muscle pain, fatigue (take naps when you feel like it but then get up and move), some hot flashes, some fat accumulation. I agree that regular exercise (don't kill yourself) and watching diet are very important. Also a positive attitude. You will survive treatment and likely live for many more years.
Best of luck to you!

Since your cancer is isolated to the prostate, you are definitely a candidate for the five sessions Of SBRT Rather than 28 days of radiation. At a PCRI recent meeting, they mentioned that Doctors are doing the 28 days of radiation because it pays a lot better than just five days of CyberKnife. Were they planning on radiating the whole prostate bed as well as the prostate? They can combined CyberKnife with many fewer EBRT radiation sessions if they want to do the whole prostate bed as well.

I had seven weeks of radiation after the cancer came back, Following my surgery. I had it First thing in the morning, And went to work right after. I never noticed any side effects from the radiation until about five years later when I had a little bit of incontinence. As you see in this forum, other people have all different types of side effects.

Having so many Positive cores, I would highly recommend you get a decipher test to see how aggressive your cancer really is.

Many people find out their Gleason score is different if they have surgery. In my case, it was a 3+4 after biopsy, raised to a 4+3. I’ve seen people raised from 3+4 to a 9 After their prostate was removed. Just something to be aware of, Can’t always be sure what a Gleason score is when you do radiation.

No real obvious effects just yet... so far so good.

Lift weights. 3x per week. No matter how you feel.
