First Appointment at Mayo Clinic in Arizona
My husband called to schedule an appointment for a second opinion for his prostate cancer treatment. We sent in all his pathology and scan results. When MAYO called back my husband was given an appointment with a Urologist at Mayo. Can anyone help us with what we can expect for this first appointment? We had really hoped we would be scheduled with a Radiology Oncologist so we could discuss treatment options. It seems like we are having to start back at the beginning with having to see a urologist. We live in Oregon and will be traveling out of town, obviously, so we want to make certain booking flights, and a hotel room will be worth this first appointment. We would really like some feed back on this as we navigate what to do. Thank you!

Phoenix is a beautiful city and this is a great time of year there. I hope that you make this a mini vacation. I lived there for more than 50 years but now retired on the beach north of LA. Good luck!

1 Reactionthemurfs, it seems like you would be scheduled with an oncologist. You might call scheduling and ask if you could be scheduled with a radiation oncologist. It's better if you find one first. Dr Yu is a radiation oncologist specializing in proton. I was able to schedule a zoom appointment from California because he has a California license. He seems to be a really good doctor.
Any Mayo commenters out there with experience at Scottsdale Mayo with a radiation oncologist you could recommend, please weigh in for the Murfs.
If you decide to have treatment at Mayo you may be in for a long visit in Scottsdale. Yes, it's beautiful, but can be expensive with flights and hotels.

1 ReactionNow that you mention it, I think my husband was told that we could do a zoom call but this would have to be with someone licensed in Oregon, but he was a urologist. He had in person options as well but they were all with urologists. This does seem odd to me???
I live in Arizona and all my doctors are at Mayo. What you described seems to be the protocol at Mayo. A few years ago I had a torn rotator cuff. Same procedure met with a physician assistant first. Next appointment was with the specialist. Now I’ve been diagnosed with prostate cancer, same procedure urologist first, next week radiation doc.
The urology area and cancer are at the Phoenix campus. Scheduling is very helpful. Good luck🍀

Hello, I understand your concerns. I had a similar situation. I live in Wyoming and wanted a second opinion from the Phoenix Mayo Clinic. A long story short: I had a Zoom meeting. After the Zoom meeting I was asked if I want to go ahead with their plan or if I wanted to talk with another doctor. Initially, I said I didn’t know and would let them know. After a week, my wife and I felt comfortable with their plan and I didn’t have second doubts. Good luck your decision.

1 ReactionHello, I originally leaned toward radiation and hormone treatment. Instead, I chose surgery, that was back in January 2022. Following my surgery, I’ve had good energy and feel positive about each day. Unfortunately, my doctor had to “cut wide” in order to remove spreading cancerous tissue on one side of my prostate. I was totally incontinent for about 5 months. I was 95% continent after 10 months. My erectile function has comeback but it’s weak. I’ve had my PSA monitored every three months; it’s been undetectable. I grateful to the doctors and staff at the Mayo Clinic — very knowledgeable and caring!
