fibula fracture
I am 68 yo. I have osteopenia. I broke my Fibula at the end of March 2024. Fracture just wasn't healing, no bone growth. Mid June had bone graft, plate and 4 screws put in. IF my bone isn't growing after all this ( I am still non-weight bearing) , what is next step.

Tymlos is good for healing and probably Forteo. If your bone density is very poor a doctor might also suggest Evenity. Has anyone suggested a medication for osteoporosis for you?
No one has suggested any medications . I will email my doctor now to ask about them . Thank you. My results of my x-ray yesterday shows the fracture has closed. I am to build up to 100% weight bearing in 6 weeks.
Well, osteopenia is the stage before osteoporosis. I'm guessing that with the graft and the screws holding it all together, the bones will fuse. I don't know of any specific drugs to treat osteopenia. Exercise and calcium can't hurt. Get well!
After thinking about jcole2008's situation, it seems PCPs and the medical establishment could do a better job educating people on bone health.
I'm fortunate and while I have terrible osteoarthritis, my bones are otherwise healthy. When I had my knees replaced in 2022 at age 67, the surgeon was able to use special metal prostheses. The edges of the metal (titanium) are ever so slightly porous, allowing my own healthy bone to grow into the prostheses, providing a much more secure bond.
I don't know about osteopenia, but if I had osteoporosis, the surgeon would have had to use non-porous prostheses and cement to bond bone and metal. My surgery required no cement.
Now osteoporosis and osteopenia may be genetic issues, like arthritis. I'm not sure if there is a solution. But we get news on heart health, muscle health, weight, and a variety of other topics. Why not bone health? Bones are after all living tissue with their own blood supply.
