Explosive diarrhea, gerd and hives

Posted by clkurth @clkurth, Jan 26 9:53am

Our daughter has been experiencing episodes of explosive, watery diarrhea, persistent gerd and occasional hives. She was prescribed an antibiotic, and has done an elimination diet, but these efforts have not helped. She is also on bupropion, and I am wondering if this could be symptoms of serotonin syndrome? She takes Tums which helps only minimally. We’re baffled! Anyone’s help would be much appreciated.

This certainly is a terrible thing to go through!

Is she going through an emotionally stressful time?
Has something changed in her environment?
Have there been any traumatic events in her life?

These sorts of things wreck my digestion, until I get them resolved.

In the last year ii have experienced explosive diarrhea-it’s so horrible and embarrassing. I became a prisoner in my own house.
My doctor finally put me on a Steroid Entocort. It helped immensely! Unfortunately steroids are only used temporarily. However it has given my intestines some healing time.
I am now trying the Mediterranean Diet for Beginners and that is working well for me.
Hope this helps your daughter. Such a helpless feeling as a parent.
Best of luck moving forward.

I deal with explosive diarrhea, severe cramping and vomiting nearly all the time. Get this......my GI told me "I would have to learn to [manage my expectations]", whatever the "H" that means! 🤣 I asked him [a little sarcastically, I will admit] if that meant I could never expect to be without it?! 😆 I get a very puzzled look from other drs when I tell them about this response! But, I find the only thing that helps me is Imodium, but you have to be careful not to take too much, or then you end up in, what I call, a "dance" with Imodium. What I mean by that is that it can constipate you with too much. Then, when it wears off, i am back to the diarrhea! Lord, what fun I have in my life! I'm sorry I am not more help, but I have been unable to get a Dr to help me with this problem!

Bupropion isn’t a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI).. it inhibits reuptake of norepinephrine (SNRI).

SSRIs are one of several drugs that are Medication triggers for microscopic colitis. Proton Pump Inhibitors such as Nexium for GERD are another such drug. Unfortunately it can only be diagnosed via random colon biopsies during a colonoscopy. But if diagnosed there is treatment in the form of colon-specific steroid that doesn’t cause systemic effects typically associated with steroids. It is called Budesonide and is dreadfully expensive. It can be affordable if you leverage GoodRx for pharmacies in your area. The discounts vary widely pharmacy to pharmacy.

I would expect docs might first advise more standard approaches of anti diarrhea meds like Imodium (available over the counter) and some Pepcid (treats gerd but not a PPI)

Gentle foods like dry toast, rice, bananas, etc. I’d just try all those things to try and calm things down.

I understand that fiber capsules are able To help diarrhea or Constipation
but I can’t speak to its use with diarrhea. Perhaps others can

Good luck!!

Well this is going to sound nuts but, has she ever been bitten by a tick? The Lone Star Ticks cause Alpha Gal a meat allergy. It happens hours after eating meat. Mine was always around 2-4 AM Id wake up doubled over with stomach pain, followed by explosive diarrhea and sometimes vomiting, after that I would break out in hives from scalp to souls of my feet, then sweating, followed by violent shaking and chills. These episodes vary from person to person. Sometimes I would eat meat (red meat, pork etc not chicken or fish) And FYI meat products come in all kinds of strange things, like marshmallows, and vaccines in the form of gelatin. I lived for decades with it and never knew what it was!
A simple blood test can rule out Alpha Gal.

How clever @gigipatula I have a neighbor with that problem. He had Covid recently and we who wanted to drop food by his house were all educated about where meat products hide.

OTC: Have you tried activated charcoal capsules?
Rx: What about Cholestyramine?
Sounds to me like you need a new gastroenterologist to get you out of a hellish state of being.
