Exercises to increase flexibility after multilevel thoracic fusion

Posted by leslie49 @leslie49, Jun 18, 2023

I'm looking for any information for how to get any flexibility after an 8 level thoracic fusion.

I'm fused 3 levels cervical; 8 levels thoracic; 5 levels lumbar. I am trying to get the flexibility to swim the freestyle or breast stroke; be able to walk and play pickleball.

Was a lifetime swimmer but now cannot bring my head out of water due to my latest thoracic fusion surgery. Cannot walk comfortably due to the fact that my fusion pushes me forward........thanks.......

I have had a cage on c567 the only relief and movement that helps is from my Osteo stretching my neck side to side. Never traction that makes it worse. I hope this helps a little. Oh and burning my nerves in my lower back was amazing too take care

I suggest you return to PT. I presume you received a home exercise program post operatively unless you’re so fused up you cannot move as expected? What were your agreed upon (with your surgeon) expectations preoperatively? I’m only fused L4-S1 and cannot imagine being in your shoes. Exercise has been my saving grace in keeping me away from doctors despite having spinal OA, chronic pain syndrome, stenosis and PN.

@leslie49 you will notice I have slightly modified the title of your post to bring attention to your goal of increasing flexibility through exercise post-op. How long were you in PT and do you feel your range of motion is considerably less than your surgeon had anticipated?
