Evista (raloxifene)
Anyone have experience with this drug? My insurance will not cover the IV Boniva until I have tried this or oral biphosphonate. My dr wanted me to stay away from oral due to my gastrointestinal issues.

Great question, @lesleighjarrett. I found some information on Raloxifene from Mayo Clinic that you may find helpful (http://www.mayoclinic.org/drugs-supplements/raloxifene-oral-route/description/drg-20065760). I'm also tagging @mdsa55 and @katemn, two members who have wrote about their experience with this medication. What research have you done on Evista that you could share with the group?
Hello Lesleigh, I have taking Evista for over five years. Initially for bone density. Personally I have not had a bit of trouble. I have Gerds .. have head of my bed elevated 5 inches and take Aciphex for it but have not had a bit of trouble with the Evista as far as I can see.
As a side note .. I am high risk breast cancer but so far no problems as of age 73 (my mother is from a family of 6 sisters .. 5 of the 6 sisters had breast cancer .. 2 of them died of it.) so I see a Breast Oncologist. Just saw her last week. She told me to STOP taking Evista 4x a week and take it DAILY .. that it was VERY important for breast health!! Interesting! So Evista does double duty!
An interesting article on that at: http://www.breastcancer.org/treatment/hormonal/serms/evista
Hope this helps you in your decision making! Katherine
Yes, I've used Evista for many years. It's quite effective in keeping bone density at good levels with no GI problems.
I took Evista for a few years for bone density . I had no problems . It was expensive so I stopped taking it . My bone density took a hit but I am still borderline so am not taking medication . Exercise and weight training keeps it a bay so far.
@nhaegele It's great that your exercise and weight training are working so well. Regarding the prices of Evista, this year my co-pay for Evista dropped by quite a bit. As it has been generic now for at least a couple of years, you might try it again to see what the price would be. Teresa
Thank you for your information.

@nhaegele I agree with Katherine. There is a history of breast cancer in my family as well, so Evista adds the extra protection for the breasts as well as the bones, more bang for the buck, so to speak!
Have you experienced any hot flashes with Evista. Thanks
I’m 74 and have used generic Evista for years with no side effects. I also take Vit D. Dexa scans have improved from osteopenia to normal numbers.
