Ever make a disability claim based on being on ADT?

I have a long-term disability policy that I have been paying for 19 years without a claim. I don't plan to work after my next round of treatment. Just curious if anyone has claimed disability due to hormone treatment side effects?

ADT was part of my longer-term disability claim, but it also included my spinal injury and the fact that my cancer is at stage 4, so I don't know if ADT alone would have swung it (plus, guidelines may be different in the U.S.).

After a year, when I was able to work half time, I let the insurance company know and dropped to just 50% disability.

If you have had a recurrence of prostate cancer after treatment, you are automatically eligible for disability payments from SSA. Google their Compassionate Allowance program. As to your private insurance - I have no idea, but if you qualify for SSA’s disability program, maybe that automatically qualifies you for the private insurance.

Even if you get a recurrence after RP and go on SRT?

REPLY

That was my exact situation. Before SRT, I had a PSMA/PET that indicated recurrence.

I'm in Ontario, and provincial government disability payments (ODSP) are means-tested, so I wouldn't qualify. They're also pretty measly.

I haven't had a recurrence per se because my cancer is stage 4 and will never go away, but it is under good control now and I expect many years of stability on ADT + Apalutamide. I had a lot of back and forth with my private insurer for the first couple of years (all very civil), and we seem to have both settled down to a compromise where I claim only half disability even when I'm not working (since I'm physically capable of working half time), and they don't make me keep filing monthly reports and doctors' notes to prove I can't work full-time (since my cancer and spinal injury are never going away and I have to stay on ADT forever, with all the side-effects).

It’s going to depend on your policy and company. I had a catastrophic medical policy which I paid into for 25 yrs.
They refused to pay a dime until I could prove that BC/BS would not pay for my surgery which was done out of network by a private surgeon who took no insurance. Sounds easy, right?
Took me 6 months of letters, phonecalls and finally a threat to the company’s agent to sue him personally, to get me resolution and get reimbursed 39K on a $50K max. Good Luck!

YEs , you should be able to claim BUT , make sure yoru Dr's know your going to claim . Maybe discuss it with your 2 key Dr's before you claim . Insurers are tight with money and the "start to negotiate " when they should be paying in full. Be prepared with Dr's notes and letters and even Phychology report . Get familiar with those Dr's ahead of time and make sure they know what you are doing. You will need their support for sure . But yes , most disability policies would pay you - no problem ! Read over contract details now , again , before you claim ! God Bless Sir ! James on Vancouver Island .
