Endocrinologist - Diabetes

I have stage 3 Osteoporosis and Graves Disease. My first appointment with an endocrinologist is in October. Her specialty is Diabetes. Will she be any use to me? It seems there is no one listed in my area that is Thyroid specific. I've had hyperthyroidism since I can remember. But just diagnosed 20 years ago. Thank you.

My husband was referred to an Endo for his osteoporosis. Seemed quite knowledgeable on various treatments. Prescribed first Reclast infusion this past April, with no side effects so far.

I don’t know the answer to your question, but it made me recall something I noticed recently when visiting medical offices. The Duke Endocrinology offices at at least 2 locations have a bone scanning lab next to them. I wondered why.

Thank you. My question is probably geared for those of us who have thyroid disease. I know my thyroid is at play with my osteoporosis, the science sort of points that direction. Does anyone have a endocrinologist that deals just with thyroid and osteoporosis? Is there such a thing? Thank you so much!

Hi @linza I happen to have a friend who has pre-diabetes and hyperthyroidism. She is under the care of an endocrinologist whose specialty is diabetic care among other subspecialties. My friend's thyroid condition is very well managed. Lately a dexa scan revealed osteopenia- her endo ordered a battery of tests right away. I was very impressed by the thoroughness of this endo since I went through op diagnosis and many probing tests for a possible cause. We don't know yet if a referral will be made for a bone specialist. I'd say an endocrinologist is knowledgeable with the overall endocrine system. If a complex treatment will be involved for osteoporosis, then an endo specializing with osteoporosis might be needed.
