Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) no sedation?

Posted by wisfamily @wisfamily, 21 hours ago

Hi

So Ive put off screening EGD and Colonoscopies due to being higher risk with using sedation due to Mast Cell activation and previous reactions to sedation. I just dont have time to be out of commission over something like that . I also cant use the reg prep for the colonoscopy which makes it more of a pain.
However Im 60 and Im going to need to suck it up and get it done .

Has anyone out here done an EGD without sedation and if so tell me your story and how it went because its a little terrifying to me.

Same for Colonoscopy and a different prep .

Thanks in advance.

I had to look up mast cell activation to understand. What a challenge! Suddenly I’m not feeling so bad about all my allergies.

What I wanted to check was if propofol is safe for MAST and I’m reading for most patients it is. The word most is troubling as I’m not sure how they test for that in advance.

I am given propofol for colonoscopies and EGDs because conscious sedation and pain meds don’t work on me. My first colonoscopy with conscious sedation had to be stopped because of unbearable pain. Propofol works like a dream for me. Very easy to wake up from it too.

Each body is different on how many pain signals are sent to the brain. My body overreacts to everything so max pain for me. I have a nerve disorder too though. I’ve known people that wake up from major surgery and have no pain even without meds. I hope you’re one of those. Ask your medical team if propofol is safe for you. Best of luck to you!

Tagging a few members who have mentioned an EGD who might share about whether they have had one of these procedures without sedation, or known someone who had it done this way @kaforester3 @bergem @lsimoneau71 @parrot53 @anonman78 @betterb4 @dilane67. @kdubois @dandl48 @ladysky also may have some thoughts on this.

Maybe they could try the EGD without sedation and have the propofol on hand if needed, as long as you're a candidate for propofol, of course. EGDs are quick, but it depends on your gag reflex. (Mine is very strong). Colonoscopies take longer and can be uncomfortable or painful at times, but I know of patients who have had it done without sedation. Hope yours goes well with or without sedation!
