Does Lexapro work for anyone? I definitely need a new antidepressant.
I’ve been on generic Paxil for several years. Lately I’ve been so depressed. Didn’t even want to go to granddaughter’s graduation party but forced myself. Lexapro worked for my mother and granddaughter but I used to drink quite a bit and you can’t do that on Lexapro. I’ve quit drinking now.

I didn’t think I could commit, but then I research my prescription (Escitalopram) and realized it’s a Canadian name brand for Lexapro. I’ve been on this drug for over 10 years it has worked well for me. I googled Paxil, seems to have greater risk of side effect and should be discuss with your Doctor how to wean off it and go on another antidepressant .
Congratulation on quit drinking !
Thank you for your response. Glad generic Lexapro is working for you. I need to find something that will help me face this crazy world we live in. I see my doctor tomorrow and will ask her for Lexapro. Take care.
I have major depressive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder. I was on lexapro for years and was ok, but gradually it stopped working. I just started on vilazadone a week ago so it’s too soon to know if it will work for my depression, but I’ve already noticed a slight lessening of anxiety.
@h622467. One of my doctors told me that sometimes an antidepressant that was effective becomes less effective and stops working. You wrote that was your experience on paroxetine (Paxil). From what I understand everyone's response to an antidepressant can be different - it works for some people and not for others. My brother and I have found that the same antidepressant works for both of us. Since Lexapro worked for your mother and granddaughter it might work for you. Did you discuss this with your doctor?
Did you stop drinking alcohol through a 12-step program or other recovery group? You might already know that while alcohol feels good in the moment it makes depression and anxiety worse and contributes to the cycle of alcohol use. So being in recovery and taking medication as prescribed sounds like a good place to be for you.
I can see why you want to make a change given how depressed you were when your granddaughter had her graduation party. Even though you had to force yourself out your door I'm thinking you feel good about yourself that you got yourself to the party. Is that true?
I’ve found they all stop working after a number of years. I’ve been on a lot of them. Would love to hear how the new drug works for you. In the meantime I’m going to try Lexapro. It worked for two members of my family. Take care.
Yes, I was glad I went to the party. But I pretty much kept to myself and didn’t mingle much except with family.
I quit drinking on my own. Just decided it was time. I wasn’t a raging alcoholic or anything but there were plenty of times when I finished a whole bottle of wine and didn’t remember much the next day. Do I miss it? Sure do. I’m an introvert who became the life of the party when I drank. I’m definitely not as much fun anymore but my friends accept that.
Hopefully Lexapro will give me some of my fun personality back. I miss that.
I’ve been on Lexapro since 2006, 20mgs daily. Overall depression under control. Side effects, I stopped biting my finger nails and shaking my leg. For me it has been great
That’s great to hear! Thank you!
Didn't work for me or my friend. You'll never have an orgasm if you are on it.
Thx, but I’m a 74-yr-old woman who really doesn’t care about that anymore. 😉
