Does knee stiffness ever go away after total knee replacement?
I had my right knee relaced in January 2024 and am scheduled to have my left knee replace in December 2025.
I still struggle with stiffness in my right knee after 2 years. Does anyone have this problem and know what can be done with it?
My doctor says it might improve over time.
Oh well I am much better off with my new knee.

Same here with my left knee, can’t kneel and kind of stiffness, after1,5 years.
After all it is a huge relief now than before, I nearly couldn’t walk anymore.
What helps me is water exercises and Foam steps, I have to stretch my back of the legs..

2 ReactionsI’ve had three TKRs, one being a redo after an infection. Perhaps I’ve tuned it out with eight years since the last one, but I don’t feel stiffness or other limitations and stay active hiking and skiing. I am conscious of avoiding pounding steps and don’t run particularly on hard surfaces.

1 ReactionThank you for the feedback.
I avoid impact exercises as well but I do quite a bit of hiking.
Hopefully my next TKR will be less problematic.
@rainerhans
Thanks for the info.
@sbcarcht How long after your surgery did the infection show up?
Right Sept 2017 and Left Jan 2018. Everything went well for the first couple of years. Then my right knee started acting up a bit after bike riding and swimming (go figure). The surgeon prescribed Aqua PT and conventional PT. No real relief. After my left hip replacement Feb 2022, all was going well. Even my knees I think appreciated the rest. What was until day 43, I was out walking when my left foot slightly scuffs over a dirt mound. I saw the surgeon who took X-Rays and ordered labs. Everything looked great and the doc told me to rest a couple of weeks. Well the right leg/knee took on a huge work load. The right knee was really aching. I saw the knee surgeon, he made me feeling warm and fuzzy when he told me he no longer does knee replacements. He gave me a sleeve and told me to use Diclofenic gel. Great advice, NOT!!! 2 year and 3 doctors later, I got the answer I was waiting for, the bands holding things together weren't heavy duty enough. the doc gave me a Donjoy Reaction Knee brace. No more aches and pains after swimming and bike riding. I told my PT what was happening and asked if there was a way to mimic the brace without the bulkiness. We tried K-tape, and for the last 14 months I have been using K-Tape with now problems. I consider this Dr my new best friend!!! I hope that the K-Tape will be a long term solution. I would like to avoid a revision. Main thing, JUST KEEP ON MOVING!!!

5 Reactions@paulsk The infection developed about seven months after my surgery. We never figured out how the infection happened. I had been fully recovered and been skiing and backpacking the Grand Canyon without any problems.
