Does anyone keep a food diary for HE

I’m interested if keeping track of the foods I eat to see if certain foods have an effect on my hepatic encephalopathy

A food diary is a good idea. Not everyone is disciplined enough to keep one long term. If you are able to manage it, show it to your pcp and gastroenterologist at appointments. Keep track not only what you eat but how much and when. Protein (if tolerated) intake is important. They say protein sources such as vegetables (legumes, soy products), dairy are preferable over meat.

Also small, frequent meals can help prevent fluctuations in ammonia levels so this is important to write down as well,

If you suffer from swelling, your doctor may have suggested limiting sodium, if you’re eating something from a can or box, the amount of salt should be listed with the nutritional information on the side of the box or can. You can record this as well. If you weigh yourself you can record this and see if swelling is related to increasing sodium intake.

I totally support this act of self care. Good luck!
