Anyone experience amiodarone induced neuropathy?

Posted by sciscented @sciscented, Jul 31, 2021

I saw the neurologist this week where he performed an EMG test.
Turns out I’m suffering fro neuropathy. When he looked at my medication he determined that my situation was caused by Amiodarone which I’ve been using for three years following an AFib situation. He informed my cardiologist about this which he in turn changed the medication to TRIZIAC immediately.
Does anyone out there had this situation?

Amiodarone does seem to have a connection to neuropathy. This article is from 2020 but I've seen several older articles on amiodarone induced neuropathy.

Are you taking amiodarone? Have you discussed it with your doctor?

I already have periferal neuropathy in my feet and lower legs. I have to take amiodarine for Afib, but I’m having an ablation in April followed by a Watchman. At that time the doctor will take me off the amiodarone. I already have no pain, but terrible imbalance. Should I be concerned?

I wouldn't think so but it would be good to discuss any concerns you have with your doctor.

I checked the Pharmacopeia and amiodarone has a possible side effect of demyelinating polyneuropathy but this has occurred so rare it is not a defined side effect. Your doc can help you suss this out.

Hello @rorygirl, I hope you don't mind but I thought I would respond to your private message in this discussion you started on amiodarone causing your neuropathy. You mentioned you have started the Protocol (https://theprotocolworks.com/) but were asking if you should stop the other supplements you were already taking. I think you said in another post that some were the same as what is in the Protocol. I don't think I would take the other supplements if they are also in the Protocol.

You also mentioned you are trying wean yourself off of amiodarone. I think you really need to discuss this with your doctor since I'm assuming it was prescribed for a condition you have. Your doctor might be able to provide some suggestions or alternatives.

TY John. Dr is fully aware. I pasted the following: you should know that amiodarone may remain in your body for several months after you stop taking it. You may continue to experience side effects of amiodarone during this time. Be sure to tell every health care provider who treats you or prescribes any medication for you during this time that you have recently stopped taking amiodarone: What is the definition of several months?
