Do You Get the Impression You Are Not Believed by Others…

Posted by SusanEllen66 @SusanEllen66, 4 days ago

When you tell your “story” do you feel like others think you are lying?
For example, you go to a new doctor, give them your long list of medical situations and you get the feeling you are not believed.

Or you tell someone a true, but unusual experience you have had. You get that side glance, squinting eyes look…you can tell they doubt your story.

It happens to me, what about you?

That definitely happens to me. Sometimes in my life it is a group of people that don't believe me. Sometimes people do it intentionally (like what low quality characters they are). Sometimes when I told someone something, like I met this interesting person, they were like "Oh yea, where do they live!?" as if saying "I don't believe you. You have to prove it.". The fact is though the truth is the truth no matter what anyone else thinks. You'll always come out far ahead if you tell the truth. Never exaggerate either.

If that was happening to me, I would seek out other individuals. Just being on this site I realize how alone I can feel with others present. But most of the time I feel in the right place. It is great to have a format where other's offer their experiences or gives good advice. Alot of times what they have been through makes me appreciate all of the differences and sometimes 💯 on the side of greatness with your sharing. Thank you, everyone, for your sharing.

The feeling I got from doctors was that they pretty much believed me, but they didn't care one way or the other.

I'm not sure which is worse.

This has been very helpful to me over the years and immensely liberating.

What other people think of us is none of our business.

Yes, I’ve had that happen with doctors many times because I so often have rare disorders, symptoms and side effects. It’s really insulting and frustrating. We each know our own body and know when something is wrong. I’m never there asking for pain meds because they do nothing for me so what would be my motive for making stuff up? Going to the doctor is not on my list of fun things to do.

My favorite scenario that has happened many times in my life is a snotty doctor that insists there is nothing wrong with me, indicates I’m wasting his time, but finally agrees to run tests just to prove me wrong. Then the test results come back abnormal, support everything I just described and the doctor has to eat crow. Suddenly they go from mean to nice. It’s an amazing transformation. Ha! Luckily for them I’m just happy to have answers so I don’t rub it in. 😊

I have had multiple doctors do that to me. If you are older and especially female, you do not always get taken seriously or fully listened to. To me, it isn’t only about being taken seriously or believed, it can be doctor bias, arrogance, ignorance, or disrespect. They just may not care. They stop listening.

There are many doctors who should retire or change careers.

Older patients and females must work extra hard to advocate for themselves and keep pushing for proper diagnosis and treatment options to improve quality of life. You need to do research and educate yourself plus review all of your medical records to have knowledgeable conversations with doctors and to ask questions. If doctors dismiss you, you must fire them and keep looking for doctors who still care to help their patients feel better and improve their quality of life.

I agree; think of it as a great way to quickly screen out a bad dr and move on.
A dr can be academically bright but a disaster with people.

And it's hard when you only have 15 minutes to elaborate and most of those minutes the doctor is looking at his computer plugging in what you are saying. I love it when they bill the insurance company 30 minutes for the visit and I barely got 15.

Apathy from a doctor is far worse, especially when what we want is empathy. I had one doctor in the eight years of suffering from chronic, severe pain who was truly empathetic. He tried just about everything he could think of to help me, all to no avail. I can truly respect that. That, as opposed to my last neurologist, who spent all of six minutes with me, only to dismiss me.

I will also add that in certain occupations, and with certain people, they are skeptical at first in order to get to the truth. It's a way of preventing being duped and ensuring the truth. Sometimes people will ask you the same question again to see if you say the same thing. So if you only provide the truth, and no exaggeration, then in most cases the truth will become known.
