Do I have a right to request uncommon test to my doctor

Posted by audreygold @audreygold, 1 day ago

I understand that colonic manometry is not commonly performed in adults. However, I would like to request this test instead of the Sitz marker test to avoid the risk of fecal impaction. Can colonic manometry provide an equally accurate diagnosis for colonic transit issues as the Sitz marker test?

Hello @audreygold, and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect! It sounds like you are working with a provider to troubleshoot digestive problems. I feel your pain. My off the cuff answer to your initial question, is “yes”. You absolutely have a right to request any test you want. Of course, it may not be provide the standard route to solving your problems and insurance may/may not cover it. It sounds like it will help to find out how your doctor recommends minimizing rocking your already difficult symptoms through your troubleshooting process.

My understanding of colon transit testing is that manometry measures the strength and coordination of muscle contractions while transit testing helps understand the amount of time that it takes for a substance to move through. I struggle with constipation and recently had both anorectal manometry and nuclear transit testing done, a combination that was helpful for me. Are you comfortable sharing more about your unique situation? You mention requesting tests. What are your symptoms? Are you working with a GI doctor and if so, where are you at in the process?
