Statin discontinued due to neuropathy. What are some alternatives?
I have been using Lipitor since 2007 for lowering my cholesterol which is on the list of those medicines that are suspected to cause neuropathy. I am thinking of discontinuing this menace but before doing so want to check with those members who have discontinued using statin and what is their experience. What alternative methods have they since adopted for lowering their cholesterol .. diet, alternative medication, exercise or anything else ?

I agree. It's great you have found success with a natural product. Thanks for spreading the word. -Rachel

2 ReactionsThe last day I took ANY Statin drug was October 15, 2018. After extensive on-line research I came up with Bragg's Organic Apple Cider Vinegar and still take one tablespoon in 8 ounces of cold water every morning BEFORE breakfast. Look it up. Everyone is different but it seems to work for me because in every checkup in the last year and a half my LDL, etc. has been within normal perimeters. There are too many doctors today that are just interested in writing prescriptions and moving on to their next patent during their 15 minute insurance allotted office visit!

@margaretob I hope you,LL have good results I've tried so many that Iwent off b c of muscle pain but the one I'm on now doesn't bother me
I QUIT STATINS, heard they cause the pain and took them for decades, just watch my diet without them. I do not know what my CHOLESTERAL IS NOW.
NO STATINS NO GLUCOPHAGE JUST MY INSULIN AND THE GABAPENTIN AND THE METANX...so far some of the pain is gone. Will see an MRI on FRIDAY to see if it is in my spine. M.

1 ReactionI’m allergic to all statins and I have high cholesterol and high triglycerides. I’ve gotten them all down to normal with my diet. I basically follow the all American diet-balanced. And the easiest way that I do that is a do a quarter of a plate with fruit, quarter plate of meat and a half of a plate of greens. My salad i use the Italian vinegar instead of salad dressing. Basically just eliminate all sugar and all cars from your diet I will see what your numbers do! No sodas or juices.- water water

2 ReactionsHi, @kazz30 - when you say your statin prescriptions were unsuccessful, do you mean at lowering your LDL? Have you experienced any side effects with the red yeast rice capsules?

1 ReactionAfter several unsuccessful Statin prescriptions, my PCP suggested Red Yeast Rice 600mg capsules which I purchased at Sam's Club.
My LDL cholesterol was reduced from 110 to 90 after 30 days and I continue taking it until I achieve a 70 LDL reading.
Having 2 stents in the LCA is reason for the lower goal.
BOTH! It is a well known risk (not potential) for PN. Just do a quick Google search. I believed this pill pusher for 8 years and the last two every time I mentioned numbness, tingling, cold feeling in my hands, mostly my feet, she either changed the subject, said "it must be your nerves" or ignored the comment completely. Turns out I never had high cholesterol nor diabetes. Brenda Peart is the head Cardiologist for the Carondelet Medical Group in Tucson, Az. and after contacting 27 lawyers, in and out of state, no one would go up against her. She ruined my life and who knows how many others and will never be brought to justice. My confidence in the medical profession is forever changed. I know one bad apple doesn't make the whole tree bad but in a few years I may wind up in a wheel chair and I have to wake up to that prospect every morning. Believe what you want about inferred treatments, exercise, Gabapentin, etc. THERE IS NO CURE FOR PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY!

2 ReactionsThe medical answer to all high cholesterol seems to be to take statins. I took lipitor for a long while and my doc even put me on the highest dosage. i complained of muscle pain, lost energy, needing to sleep for an hour every morning and another in the afternoon, constant tiredness, water retention, etc. in short, my life was gonig down the toilet but the cardiologist insisted that the statins were great. I phased them out over 30 days, lost 45lbs over 6 months (so far), and have had work done to get my lymphatic system working again as it was shut down by the lipitor poison. i am now full of energy and enjoy life!!! my cholesterol is dropping slowly but this is not the issue - i understand from an honest doctor that inflammation is like a fire and cholesterol is the fire brigade. why would doctors reduce the fire brigade with statins and not address the fire? I need to get my triglycerides down as this is fat linked and not good. how can i achieve this and not have to take pill-poison?
to put this further into perspective, my cardiologist was talking of putting me on diabetes medicine also as my blood sugar was high @7.8. I refused and my sugar level has dropped to @5.9 and going down.
