Diarrhea during/after radiation and Orgovyx?

Posted by jime51 @jime51, Aug 19 12:21pm

I'm in my eighth month (24 planned) of Orgovyx and completed 44 weekday radiation treatments in April (Gleason 7, N1M0). I am having 2-3 bowel movements every morning and one again in the evening. Today's my record, with 5 before lunchtime. Imodium, taken 2 tablets after each episode up to a total of 8, helps but doesn't eliminate the excessive elimination. Recommendations or commiserations?

I have no diagnosis, yet. The radiation oncologist thought diarrhea would subside once treatment ended and said the use of Imodium is "harmless." He suggested a trip to my PCP or gastroenterologist, but I had a colonoscopy in June and no damage was noted. I tried a Probiotic that another patient suggested for a month. It seemed to be working wonders for a few days, then my system returned to its "normal." Orgovyx publishes that diarrhea is one of its potential side effects and I understand that the after effects of radiation can continue to increase for some time, so I'm trying to hang on in the hope that improvement comes in the next month or so. I am four months post radiation.

This is just part of the side effects - and vary widely from person to person.
I had 2 weeks of excessive (4-7/day) bowel movements after 25 treatments. I took Immodium now and then.
Being retired and having the ability to stay close to home was the best remedy for me. I don’t think there’s anything diet wise, supplement or probiotic wise that’s gonna make a real difference, save for common sense things like avoiding super spicy or irritating foods - It simply has to run its course.
Remember, 44 radiation treatments is NOT a normal component of bowel health so all the tried snd true remedies go out the window.

If they hit the rectum during radiation diarrhea and not being able to hold it is a side effect. I dealt with it for a month or so and 6 months later I still have to honor the I might have to go feeling. Imodium is my friend whenever I go out for meals. I've surrendered to the fact that this might be my new me.

Thank you, and sorry for your common struggle! I tried one Probiotic for a month. It seemed to work wonders for a few days and no help afterward. I'm trying another recommendation while keeping Imodium and bathrooms handy. My radiation oncologist assured me that the SpaceOAR would be intact to protect throughout, but it was a few days past its supposed expiration by the time I completed treatment.
