Diabetic Neuropathy getting worse

Posted by thurlibier @thurlibier, May 19 3:20pm

I have diabetic neuropathy. I have to use a walker to get around. My feet seem to be getting worse quite rapidly. I am in physical therapy but it doesn't seem to help.
I feel like there is nothing I can do except accept that it going to get worse. I have no family and live alone. I am so depressed. Any suggestion on how to cope with the unknown

Have you tried any complementary or alternative therapies for neuropathy to see if they might provide some relief or help? - https://www.foundationforpn.org/therapies/

I feel for you and know how scary it can be to suffer alone and not have any family support system.

Do you have your diabetes and blood sugar under control? If not, that makes neuropathy worse. You need to prioritize getting this controlled to reduce worsening of your symptoms.

You can try compression socks and icing feet (cover with towel and don’t place directly on feet) or soak in cool water. You can try taking alpha Lipoic acid, Acetyl l carnitine, and magnesium supplements that can help calm down the nerve pain (I take them). You can try capsaicin nerve pain cream and lidocaine pain cream/patches (Salonpas brand is what I use), Voltaren gel for inflammation (put on feet), magnesium cream may work, and wear sturdy/supportive shoes. Warmer temperatures cause your feet to swell some which can worsen nerve pain.

It is important to have your bloodwork done regularly to also check for any vitamin deficiencies/toxicities. It would be good to work with a nutritionist/dietitian to help you review your diet/supplements.

Do you have a local community center that has resources available that can help you with daily tasks?
