Digestive issues

Posted by bumble81 @bumble81, Apr 14, 2020

I started having digestive issues last fall. By December I was told I had bilary dyskenisa and had my gallbladder removed.
That did not fix my problems.
I sometimes have traditional heartburn but mostly I have sour stomach and stomach pain mostly middle immediately below sternum and to the left. Increases after eating. I often feel like food did not make it into my stomach. Like it's stuck down there.

I will get this weird fast quiver like spasm deep inside. I can feel it with my hand I push down and so can my husband and it goes on for hours at a time. Anyone have that before? It's very strange but something inside is not working properly. I also have postprandial hypotension and intermittent difficulty swallowing.

My blood tests show slightly elevated liver enzymes but doc said they are not dangerously high. My stool is frequently bright yellow and liquid:(

Also I cannot seem to get a straight answer but do those of you with experience with ulcers did it cause excessive burping?

Hi! Definitely sounds like SIBO. Get to a GI that can order you a breath test kit like trio smart. You fast then drink lactulose and then breathe in little bags for three hours. It will tell you if you have Sibo. There are three kinds - hydrogen, methane and hydrogen sulfide(?). If positive, you can take XIFAXAN. it is an antibiotic specifically for the small intestine to kill bacteria overgrowth. There are additional treatments based on the type of Sibo. I had hydrogen and took the Xifaxan. It helped but the bad news is that Sibo returns - the meds are a bandaid not a fix. Sibo is like ibs - a symptom. So you have to figure out where it comes from and definitely change your diet. For fodmap - try MONASH there is an app for your phone. I have been trying gluten free, dairy free and definitely stay away from any artificial sugars. Stay away from probiotics and prebiotics they feed Sibo and stop the beans. They turn into sugar and feed the Sibo. And if you don’t have Sibo then I hope you can find out what you do have! Hope this helps. Ps - I could go on. I hate Sibo ! Good luck 🙂

Why avoid Probiotics, please tell me wad it your GI. I have been given the idea that they help with good bacteria in the gut. I also suffer bloating, chronic gas but tested negative for Sibo here in UK. They not very good with help for these conditions just diagnose IBS c or d.

I’ve been having worsening digestive issues for about 7 years now. I am a 56 year old male in otherwise good health. My symptoms include bloating, burping, gas after every meal. The bloating also causes pretty bad shortness of breath. I try to eat smaller meals but then get hungry again and eat more. I still have bloating when I go to bed and wake everyday burping. My diet seems pretty healthy but I am not big into vegetables. May diet consists of lean turkey, chicken, eggs, cheese, rice, potato’s, bread, green beans, corn, peas, black beans and salad. I do also have fast food once in a while. Maybe once every 2 weeks. I also have mild to moderate constipation. I take fiber supplements often which does help. I have been to gi and they suggested I try the fod map diet and digested enzymes. I tried the enzymes with no success. I am having trouble understanding the fod map diet. Is there a book that will give me an exact list of food daily?

Hi! Sorry to hear. From what I have researched, Probiotics and prebiotics feed bacteria so they will grow more of the beneficial bacteria. With Sibo, the small intestines are the issue. It is an overgrowth of bad bacteria. For Sibo hydrogen dominant, that means an overgrowth of two bacteria specifically - EColi and kerribellum (spelling?). The prebiotics feed these bacteria and they multiply which is not wanted when you have an overgrowth of them. Have you tried fodmap and elimination diet? Hope you are feeling better

It does sound like you have SIBO. I also have had all of the above symptoms that you had, for many, many years. Last year I had a UTI, which occurred the day before my scheduled colonoscopy. My PCP put me on a course of Ciprofloxacin (Cipro) and I had the colonoscopy the following day.
While my symptoms are definitely much better, I still have to follow a low FODMAP diet and have to be careful of my key triggers, like onions & garlic, in addition to other culprits, which include numerous delicious, normally healthy foods. I downloaded the Monash FODMAP App, but you can go onto their site for additional information. I receive their emails with diet tips and recipes that are helpful. Everyone is different which includes different symptoms and foods that they have to avoid. I take Align which has a probiotic in it that it says is helpful for IBS. It is not a miracle that will cure you and it may or may not be helping me. Also, I do now eat a VERY varied diet which includes almost all vegetables but in small quantities with some good success.
I listen to and follow a cardiologist, Dr Pradip Jamnadas on You Tube (located in Orlando, Florida) who mentions inflammation from metabolic dysfunction as the cause of disease. As a cardiologist he often does stool tests on his patients who have similar symptoms in addition to addressing their cardiac issues. He puts his patients on herbal protocols for those who test positive for SIBO. The digestive symptoms abate and he treats whatever cardiac issues they are there for. When necessary, he puts his patients on intermittent fasting.
I also follow Dr. William Li on You Tube, who wrote a two (?) books and a 3rd one is in the works, called Eat to Beat Disease and Eat to Beat Diet. He is a medical doctor, a researcher on various diseases and an excellent teacher. The reason I mention him is b/c he often has very helpful tips on different foods for different conditions.
Good luck, I hope you find success in living a more manageable and satisfying life!

I would love to know the answer to that also. My doctor recommended it, but I’m allergic to many things and am always worried about trying something new. You be the guinea pig, ha. Good luck.

Hi! I want to preface I am under the care of GI. I’m just looking for experiences or suggestions for conversations with my GI.I (33F) have had the following:2014 - severe lower cramping with bloody stool. No testing was done but was told likely diverticulitis2017 - severe upper cramping. Again, no testing but was told it was likely a stomach ulcer.2018 - severe lower cramping with bloody stool. No testing was done but was told likely diverticulitisOver the years I started to experience more symptoms until I’m where I’m at now.Now I have constant diarrhea (liquid or soft fluffy at best) 1-8 times per day. Typically it is pale or yellow. It comes in suddenly, typically in the AM but I do have occasional midday or evening/overnight. Little to no warning, which has lead to fecal incontinence. Lots of bowel sounds. Indigestion near daily, hours after eating at times. Fatigue. Burning/cramping sensations. Bloating and flatulence.I have had a colonoscopy/EGD with biopsy. All negative. Im still getting tests so more to come.I have tried Imodium, low-FODMAP, gluten free, dairy free, elimination diets, etc. I have tried pre/probiotics, digestive enzymes, antibiotics, oil or oregano, and various other dietician ordered supplements.Anyone else experience this? What was your outcome? Any advice on what I should ask my GI about?I know it’s possible but I’m scared I’ll end up with the “can’t find anything” IBS-D diagnosis and basically be sent to live like this.I have my next appointment in a week.Thank you for reading!

I used to have the same diagnosis likely diverticulitis. IBS. colitis

When was your last colonoscopy? You should get another one.

IBS is a symptom not a diagnosis

Retired GI nurse, diverticulitis at your age is highly unlikely. If you were treated with antibiotics for it and still had symptoms then that wasn't the right diagnosis.
Sounds like IBD inflammatory bowel disease, which should have showed on biopsies. Do you have a copy of your pathology report by chance?
You could ask for a blood test for IBD like ASCA or pANCA. Have they checked your inflammatory markers?

@chronisgirlie92: Your symptoms sound familiar. I went through many tests 4 yrs ago and finally the 24 hour Urine test revealed the underlying cause. It may be worth a discussion in your next Dr visit? Best to you…
