Decompressive craniectomy and cranioplasty

My mother recently suffered a traumatic brain injury and had to undergo a decompressive craniectomy; and will soon have to go for a cranioplasty. If someone has experienced a similar intervention can you please share your recovery period and life post-surgery? During cranioplasty which type of implant did you choose?
