DCIS found after breast reduction
After taking off 9lbs.breast tissue, the pathologist found DCIS stage 0. But unable to confirm clear margins due to margins too close edge of tissue sample. Unable to determine where it came since it was tissue from reduction. Happened to get a lymph node which was negative. Currently waiting for MRI to allow breast to heal for the best chance of getting clear view. This is an unusual path and not much data available, I’m not feeling confident the MRI will show any margins because of how small it could be as well as the scar tissue from surgery., but could be a false negative.Has anyone else had this happen?

2 ReactionsI also had a breast reduction of 8lbs in February and a 3cm grade 2 tumor (no DCIS) was found in the right breast (after a negative mammogram in December). One lymph node was negative. I then had an MRI with contrast to make sure there was no cancer cells left behind; then surgery to remove 6 lymph nodes that were negative. Finished 5 days of radiation in August. It is a huge shock to find a tumor after breast reduction surgery. I’m so thankful that I had the surgery.
@suze25 thank you for sharing! I too am thankful I did the surgery! Could they tell from your MRI your margins were clear and they got it all? Did you take lymp nodes just in case?
@becks1126 what are your treatment choices?
@aydria Nothing about margins were mentioned on the MRI report. “There is no mass, architectural distortion, or abnormal enhancement in either breast. Post surgical changes with no evidence of malignancy.” There is a lot more to the report but this is the easy to understand part.
My surgeon was doing the lymph node surgery to make sure the nodes were negative. This was not negotiable.
@aydria Right now it is more frequent screenings - MRI and ultrasound - if they find anything, it is a biopsy, and I am taking a lower dose (10mg) of tamoxifen - I have elevated liver enzymes, so I can't go higher than that right now. So, it is a lot of "wait and see" which brings a lot of anxiety every six months. Ultimately, if the findings continue (so far all have been benign), potentially a mastectomy.
