Cortisone shot in knee 5 weeks before prostatectomy

I am scheduled for prostatectomy at Mass Gen Brigham on 3/31. My question is about cortisone shots. I have torn meniscus and almost bone on bone in right knee. I have had success with cortisone helping with pain and last shot was about a year ago, and knee is starting to act up again. I know I need to walk a lot after surgery to recover and prevent blood clots, so do not want my knee to stop me. My doctor said he thinks it is ok to get a cortisone shot 5+ weeks ahead of surgery, but it was a quick note on patient gateway with no long discussion. I went to “Dr. Google” and found, according to the Hospital for Special Surgery in NY, a statement that patients should not have cortisone shot any closer than 3 months before surgery due to immunosuppressive effect on healing. I do not want anything to interfere with recovery like an infection or slower healing, but also need my knee to work so I can walk. Does anyone have experience or advice about getting a cortisone shot in my knee 5 weeks before prostatectomy? If so, did it cause any issues with recovery or lead to an infection? Thanks!

No experience with cortisone and prostate. However, I am due for a shoulder surgery.(Due to a vacation waiting until May). I have to wait at least three months after I got a cortisone shot. Since that time, I may need a cortisone shot in my heel to help with plantar fasciitis. I asked my foot doctor if that would interfere with my shoulder surgery plans. He said he didn’t think so but to discuss it with my surgeon. So I would suggest you discuss it with your surgeon before you get a shot. Good luck.

Had at least 5 shots, as I can remember. Had one shot for sciatica on July 15-2025. Had surgery in same place 2 months later. Mayo surgeon didn’t flag it, and they are very good at doing pre op drug screening. Docs doing the shots have told me that a shot is better than a prednisone pill, cause the shot is local and stays more local, not completely for sure, but more so. Like above said, make your surgeon aware of it and let them advise. Best wishes your way..
